“Great location”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

This hotel is perfectly located right on the Port and adjacent to the beach making it an ideal locaton for your family holday or short break. The hotel has superb facilities including indoor and out door pools plus a busy Spa which seemed to be well used during our stay. The self service breakfast buffet provided an ample assortment of French delights to kick start the day and with bacon and sausage also on the menu you were sure to find something to satisfy those early morning taste buds. The rooms are clean with excellent (but small) balconies overlooking the Port or sea. Our visit was slightly out of season so we decided to sample the room service on one occasion - this was delivered promptly with a smile and was of high quality as well. The hotel is not the cheapest in the area. However, the views and overall quality of service make it a good place to stay.

Room Tip: Overlook the Port - high level room

We were looking for a comfortable bed, quite room and nice pool to lay around and relax in the sun and this is what we got. I thought the room was very pleasant and big enough. Big wardrobe so I could put all our clothes away plus put the large suitcase up the top. At least 1.5 metres each side of the bed to move around. Kept our snacks and food in the fridge. Little grocery shop at the bottom of the hotel. Plenty of parking in the streets around for free and seemed safe enough. We were there early September. Lovely balcony to sit on. Toilet separate from the bathroom, both small but modern enough. The toilet room did have a slight smell but I find many beach side resorts can get this smell in the bathroom. Old salty pipes but contained in the toilet room and really nothing extreme at all. We thought it was value for money and would return. If you are looking for a lot of glamour and ritz then this is not the place for you. The decore is clean and pleasant and although a bit dated it is pleasant. We loved lying by the pool and swimming in the sea late afternoon. Just a 1 minute walk to the beach. Food for breakfast was good. Nice fresh fruit salad. Again it was value for money, not exceptional but plentiful and good. I recommend the banquet on Sunday night, the food was delicious. The other evening meals were ok but not fine cuisine. Restaurants in area and we enjoyed the one on the beach out the front of the hotel twice. We went on day trips to St Tropez and Cannes. Really loved Cannes and the seafood restaurants were fabulous.l

Room Tip: We had beach side on the 2nd floor and it was quiet. We stayed 7 nights.

We stayed at the Mercure Thalassa in Port Frejus the second week in September. It is in the large Accor chain. Pros: Nice Pool, beach access, many cafes, bars, restaurants within a 10 minute walk, comfy balcony with table and chairs, modern rooms. The staff was outstanding. We had some problems with a nearby establishment and they came out and gave us a helping hand - way beyond their call of duty! The only con: The Riviera is still quite warm in September and the air conditioning was just a trickle (in the lobby too). It did cool of sufficiently at night with patio doors open. That's a deal breaker for us. For that reason, I would not return to the Mercure Thalassa again during the hot season. We did not try the in-house bar and restaurant.

Positives: Location. Negatives: The restaurant was expensive for the (low) quality of food and limited selection. It also was impossible to get "just coffee" in the morning without paying 15 euros for full breakfast buffet, and even when I asked about it, I was told 'that's the way it is.' Parking costs 15 euros per day, and the spots are impossibly small. On top of that, we were there for 3 nights, and TWICE, our numbered/assigned spot was given to someone else, and when we complained, they had US move OUR car to another spot. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but considering half the spots were too small for our car, this involved lots of running up and down stairs, and just reflected poorly on hotel mgmt in my humble opinion. The bathroom and room layout was strange, and we paid extra for a "sea view" when in reality, we had a view of a palm tree that obscured our entire view, unless you moved all the way to the edge of the balcony and craned your neck around, then you could see kind of around the tree to a sliver of beach.

I won't stay at this particular hotel again. It wasn't expensive, but it WAS too expensive to have this many problems.
