Avignon has a large number of very good restaurants which we sampled over a number of days. But for us, l'Agape stood out for its combination of inventive cooking and fair pricing. The wine list is also very extensive and well priced, especially for the older vintages. They offer champagne 'a la piscine' - which turns out to be champagne served with champagne ice cubes! We weren't brave enough to try it, though.

The 25e 'formule' for lunch includes some excellent dishes, like the 'fondue' - cheese foam with generous pieces of ham: very tasty. And the confit rabbit with tapenade and a deliciously light and flavourful side of saffron polenta. My dessert of pear in red wine was made extra special with cream and raspberries. It was also delightful to see a little girl of no more than three enjoying the adult courses, happily chomping away on octopus!

Service fast and friendly. Great place.

A small square, massive Plain trees as old as Avignon, a gentle fountain and the murmer of other diners - get the atmosphere?
Add fabulous food, first class service, and toilets so clean you could dine in them and your are in L'Agape. I dined in a Michelin star restaurant recently but the cuisine here was superior and price vastly inferior - sp why don't they have a star too? There is a blackboard in the main dining room with autographs and remarks of stars of stage, screen, and politics.
It is off the tourist track and was full of locals - you won't be disappointed.

We had dinner here tonight and it was fabulous! The wine list was extensive and offered a wide variety. The menu offered several alternative choices, from several different fixed price choices to a la cart options. Each fixed price option offered two choices from the starter, main and dessert section. Three of us all chose different starters, the same fish entree and different desserts (the cheese option plate offered 5 healthy portions of various cheeses). All were delicious.

The servers were friendly, helpful and guided us thru the various options, as we don't speak French. Although TripAdvisor indicates 4 $'s, we felt the pricing was quite reasonable.

A local restaurant that really caters to the locals and very special! Reservations essential as it is a small restaurant!

We went for lunch with friends so had the 20/25euro menu which was perfect. Not huge meals but very flavoursome. It included rabbit, octupus, pork trotters, fish, beef so plenty of choice. Service was very good. We were there from 1 until 4pm without feeling like we were overstaying our welcome. Would go back

The reason I have given an 'average' rating to this restaurant, is that the starter was a let down compare to the main dish. The two couldn't have been more different in taste, quality and presentation. We enjoyed the main dishes though and liked the desert too, so would still recommend this restaurant.
