Owner description: Gallifet Art Center is a contemporary art museum located Quartier Mazarin in the heart of Aix en Provence, seconds from the Caumont Art Center and the Granet Museum. Opened in 2011 by Nicolas MAZET, this late XVII century mansion presents all year round works by both up and coming and established living artists. In spring and summer you can enjoy lunch in the garden as well as jazz or classical music concerts in the evenings. As a student in the college right opposite, Cezanne would gaze over onto Gallifet's shimmering honeycomb façade, which people say influenced the master's future painting style.

Aix is full of treasures but this is a lesser known one. One of the city's private mansions has been converted to an art gallery and restaurant. Fronted by a large, leafy courtyard, the Gallifet is a charming oasis close to the town's busy thoroughfares. Come here and wander through the art gallery, talk to the charming multilingual owner, sip a coffee under the shade of the chestnut trees. Or have a great lunch from the short but delicious menu. The cooking is honest and based on quality, at a price lower than in mainstream establishments, none of which can match this place's unique charm. On Thursdays in summer there are jazz dinners. Well worth a try.

We went to a Thursday Arty Jazz night here. Jazz is not my favourite type of music but we were lucky enough to catch a fabulous African band. Tickets for the music only are €25, while dinner is €35 more. While the music was worth it, the food was most definitely not. For a start there was no choice of menu.

The best thing about the dinner was the bread that was served with the starter - an insipid looking and tasting pea soup. The main course for carnivores consisted of a piece of overcooked duck served with lumpy mashed potato which had a trench down the middle of it. The vegetarian option was the lumpy mashed potato with cold ratatouille. Dessert was a very ordinary tasting sponge cake with a few pieces of orange on top and ice cream.

As for wine, there was only one choice of red, white or rose wine - all at €35. We ordered the white wine which was not chilled, and, judging by the number of glasses of ice the waitresses were handing out, this was not an isolated incident.

The venue is delightful as the concerts are held in the courtyard of this historic building. The staff had gone to the trouble of decorating the tables with bouquets of real roses and the music was sublime ... but don't ruin the opportunity of a perfect evening by choosing the dinner option.

This was an extraordinary house with an eclectic collection of art. We were shown round by the owner who explained each piece to us. We enjoyed our visit and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone wishing to while away a peaceful hour in Aix. The owner couldn't be more friendly or attentive.

We visited the courtyard restaurant with two vegetarian daughters, had a great lunch. The staff were lovely, moving a table into the shade for us. There is an informal feel to the courtyard restaurant, which we loved. The food was fantastic and the setting is beautiful. The friendly owner came and chatted to us, and advised on other good places to visit locally. A couple of hours went by very pleasantly, making a perfect holiday afternoon!
