We recently stayed at this lovely rental near Rouen. We had the entire upper floor of the house to ourselves. The Tompkins had everything ready for us, lots of brochures and restaurant recommendations, bread, jam, wine, milk. They were very welcoming had lots of signs up on the walls to help us understand how to run the appliances, etc. Very few breakable decorations, which is helpful when you have kids. They've clearly put a lot of thought into making their guests' stay very easy. The house is next to a farm and a couple of small villages. The Seine is very close by, as is the forest. We very much enjoyed our visit to the area (Bayeux, Rouen, D-Day Beaches, Caen) and were very happy in this rental.
What really makes this place is Carol and Phil. Carol came and met us to help with directions and they have a great knowledge of the local and surrounding areas and can always suggest different places to suit your needs. The accommodation was spotless and adequate enough for a family of 5. Thanks again Phil and Carol.
We have just returned from a 3 week vacation in France, ending with 3 lovely days at Carol & Phillip's home. They greeted us, explained all the functions of the second storey gite, then left us to unpack & look through all the wonderful information they had collected on the area - in English. Always available for assistance, Carol & Phillip were never intrusive. Thankfully, they had left us with starter provisions as it was a Sunday & many shops are closed. We did, however, go to Duclair for brunch & 3 pattieserie/ boulangerie were open so we were able to pick up the compulsory baguette for later. The site is in a good location with easy access to so many interesting spots. We spent one full day in Rouen and one full day in Honfleur. The other day was visiting smaller villages in the area. The site is exactly as the pictures show - clean, comfortable & modern. I agree with another reviewer that a picture window in the sitting room would be lovely as the countryside here is magnificent & it is a shame not to see it from the inside. Birds chirping, the wonderful garden & the quiet of the country though were truly appreciated.
We were met after a long flight and car trip by our most welcoming hosts. Carol and Phillip immediately made us feel comfortable in their upstairs apartment which was equipped with everything we could possibly need. The bed was so comfortable and we shall never forget awakening to the sounds of birds in the Normandy dawn! We appreciated all the advice about where to shop and eat, and especially the driving tips from Phillip. Thank you for making our first few days in France so memorable.
We have just returned from a fantastic stay and loved every minute so much so, we felt very sad to leave. We were met on arrival by Carol and Phillip who instantly made us feel welcome. Carol gave us a guided tour to ensure we were au fait with the layout and controls etc and had kindly provided us with provisions for our first night (this was most welcome as we arrived on a Sunday). Although Carol and Phillip were always on hand to answer any questions or offer suggestions if we need them, they were never intrusive and the atmosphere was very relaxed. The accommodation was lovely, we had the entire first floor (with its own front door) to ourselves. Car parking was off road and secure at the rear of the property.
Penneville is surrounded by rolling French farmland on the outskirts of a small village and yet less than 5mins drive from the wonderful town of Duclair on the river seine. There are some excellent local restaurants and small shops and you can catch the free river ferry from here if driving to the south side of the Seine.
There is so much to do in the area and within about an hours drive. We had rain for a couple of days but took our hosts suggestion to visit Rouen via bus which left from Duclair. (we parked for free all day in the car park adjacent to the ferry). The bus trip is comfortable, about 30mins and amazingly just over 1 Euro each way!! Although a reasonable size city, the old part of Rouen is very attractive. We took a short walk to the Panorama XXL on the river which is certainly worth a visit and shows how Rouen was in 1431 at the time of Joan of Arc. Other visits included Dieppe, Harcourt (a lovely Chateau and Arboretum, Jumiege, Caudebec, Pont Audermer and Honfleur (with Deuville and Treuville thrown in as a bonus). The Boulangeries etc were brilliant and for basics, you cant beat Carrefour which tend to be open when French shops close.
We had the use of the gardens and outdoor facilities of BBQ, chairs etc if we wanted and excellent wi-fi was provided.
This was our first holiday in France and what a lovely time we had! We are missing Penneville, Carol and Phillip and the local cakes a bit too much! I'm sure we will be returning for another visit.
