“Art nouveau delight”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 November 2011

A short trek from the centre, but well worth the visit to get a feel for the short-lived but distinctive fashion for art nouveau, and the Nancy decorative glass industry.

“A unique & magnificent place to combine with Villa Majorelle (to be booked)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 November 2011

First let's say that we bring our kids regularly to museums and getting their attention there is...how should I say..a challenge to say the least. Due to its human size (a dozen "period rooms"on 2 levels and setting (an extended "villa"), they enjoyed their visit...though not as much as my wife and I: the furniture collection is simply amazing and very well displaid and certainly ranks in the world's top tier for the Jugend Still period. We had just visited mudée d'Orsay's newly refurbished period rooms and though MO's paintings are better, the furniture and pieces of art on display in Nancy are both of excellent qualit and numerous.
A must see visit for anybody interested in Nancy's leading role at the turn of the XIXth century

“Small but very special”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2011

This very small museum won't appeal to all, but if you love the world of Art Nouveau, it's a must. The Nancy school was one of the key centres of this movement, and this museum has a wonderful display of ceramics, glass, furniture, and stained glass. Buy one of their books too, to remind yourself how beautiful this stuff is. Flash photos from behind the velvet rope just don't cut it.

“You will be WOWed by this collection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2011

The pure love of the art shows through in this charming house and collection of the School of Nancy architecture and art forms. Every room is a time capsule of the great craftsmanship, artistic vision, and real appreciation for hand crafted excellence. You must also appreciate the subtle political themes that run through each piece of furniture, particularly the table in the foyer. Get the audioguide, but leave your camera in your bag. You can only take photos from outside, but you can get great photos there.

“Beautiful items badly displayed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 September 2011

The museum is conveniently located at the end of an Art Nouveau walk starting from the centre of town (maps are available from the Tourist Office). Unfortunately, the museum is a bit of a disappointment. While the furniture and glass displayed are beautiful and a must see for anyone appreciating Art Nouveau, the items are poorly displayed. Every room is fenced off by a rope which means that you can only see the furniture from far and from one angle. Most of the glass cabinets were "guarded" by staff (3 or 4 at a time) whose discussions about their weekend and marital problems I felt like I was interrupting (and was made to feel that way) when I was trying to look at the works a bit more closely. If the staff were talking about their personal lives a bit less and were doing their job a bit more, the awful ropes could probably be taken down and we customers would be able to walk around the rooms rather than being kept at a distance. It's all a bit clinical which is a shame considering the fascinating collection.
