If it's a fairytale setting you are looking for, then this hotel is for you.

Not only is this hotel unique, but the entire city is truly majestic. The hotel is located at the top of this aincet walled city and it's hard to find a hotel with a more historic setting.

The staff were great, room was very comfortable, pool was great, food was excellent and overall this hotel is definitely worth a visit.

My scrawny companion felt like a real princess in this hotel!

We were there for one night at the end of May 2012 before going on a barge on the canal. Very classy hotel with excellent gardens overlooking the town and surrounding area - sitting outside with a cocktail was a real memory. Especially good is that the place is literally in the middle of everything so one comes out of the hotel into the maze of quaint steet, shops, bars and restaurants which abound in this medieval town.

As others have said, the ultra cozy wooden panelled library bar for an evening drink is a must as is also a meal in the main restaurant (which is more a banqueting hall) - La Barbacane. Next time we would not go for Sunday lunch as it has a fixed menu of rather rich food and no a la carte option. It is nevertheless an enchanting place for a meal - not cheap but worth the money. The staff were all charming and professional. The pictures on the website are exactly what one gets. This is certainly a place I would revisit.

Rarely have I had the pleasure to stay in a superb hotel within an ancient walled city.

Carcassonne is a walled city like no other. Although it was restored in the 19th century (with particular attention paid to architectural accuracy) Carcassonne looks very much as it would have at the height of its 11th century glory - it was already being referred to as a fortress in 300AD. In the walls and towers, there are indications everywhere of Roman construction, most significantly in the alternating red and white brick layers.

We have been to Carcassonne before at the height of summer when temperatures are soaring. However this time we visited in April, enduring some cold blustery weather. This actually added to the enigma of the town. Staying in this hotel gave us the freedom to explore the town, its winding cobbled paths, the magnificent perimeter walls and the castle at our pleasure. The Basilica Saint Nazaire is right next door (free entry) and can be seen from most of the hotel rooms. The library bar was gorgeous and conceals a secret doorway. Like one of the other reviewers, I do regret not having eaten at the renowned restaurant, however as is usually the case in France, there are very reasonably priced restaurants throughout the town serving exceptional food at very reasonable prices.

The usual price for a room at the Hotel de la Cite is 400+ euros, however if you look closely for offers, particularly in the off season, you can get rooms as cheaply as 180 euros. The rooms are glorious and spotlessly clean. The corridors are lined with impressive paintings and relevant paraphernalia (such as a sedan chair or 'litter' outside room 210, used to carry nobility). The staff are multilingual, very helpful and friendly.

Most importantly, I had the most comfortable sleeps I've ever had. I'm thinking of calling them to ask where they get their mattresses and duvets.

Our initial 1 night stay became 2 nights and we left with heavy hearts.

Room Tip: Room 215 was particularly spacious.

I stayed during the off-season when the hotel was largely empty. However, the room was excellent: comfortable and well-apportioned. The library bar was a particular treat, although I regret to this day that I did not eat in the restaurant.
