“Charming Apartment Close to Les Puces and Montmartre”
Reviewed 7 November 2015 for a stay in October 2015

My mother and I stayed in late October and had a great time! The apartment is definitely charming and spacious. It is situated on a bustling, local street that although might appear to be intimidating, is really quite fine, and we had no issues of any concerns for safety in the least. The taxi drivers all knew where the street was, as well, which is worth mentioning, however the metro is across the street and is easy to navigate to reach the inner City. There is an ATM right on the corner a few steps away, a grocery store within 5 minutes of walking, and the lovely Sacre Couer at Montmartre is an easy walk for a visit, as well. Everything you need is in close proximity. Another huge plus for us is that the apartment is a short taxi trip to Les Puces "flea market", which was one of the primary reasons for our trip, this go around! The location was great for that! It's only open on the weekends and Mondays, but absolutely worth the trip if you like antiquing and/or looking for excellent buys on French linens, silver flatware, and other unique items. (Make sure you circumvent the exterior street market surrounding the actual market area to locate the "real thing".)

In regards to the apartment, specifically, you might care to know that it is a walk-up of 4 small flights to the apartment; good to keep in mind if you have heavy, or, abundant baggage, or do not navigate stairs, well. The apartment was spotless when we arrived. The beds were comfortable and we slept well each night! Very important on holiday! The apartment is a bit noisy in the evenings due to the jovial activity taking place on the street below, and there is currently construction on the street that begins early in the morning, so, be advised if you are considering staying in the near future and if this will be an issue for you. It wasn't for us, as it's part of the local experience in our opinion. We enjoyed taking our wine on the charming terrace to watch the street come to life each evening! The lovely parquet floors are original and aged over the years. They're beautiful, however forced us to tiptoe throughout the space, as we were fearful of creating too much noise for each other, and for the downstairs neighbors; especially as it is requested to minimize noise levels during early and later hours of the day. This made us a bit uncomfortable and overly-conscious during our stay, however the wonderful owner, Luke, had indicated that he was considering carpets to install through the key travel areas to minimize the squeaking and potential discomfort for future renters. This is a small issue, but definitely affected our time spent in the apartment. The kitchen is beautifully-updated and perfectly-outfitted, and we loved being able to return to the apartment to prepare our own dinners with wine and goodies purchased from Carrefour around the block, and a local fruit/veggie market!

There is a separate toilet/water closet in the apartment hallway and a sink/shower through one of the bedrooms, so, you must share the split spaces with your flatmates during your stay. This is typical in many Parisian living spaces, but may not work for you if you require two full (or, ensuite) bathrooms to accompany the 2 bedrooms. The shower is also renovated and really, really lovely with the rain shower head! The are only 2 bath towels and a couple of hand towels provided, so, if you will have more than 2 people in the flat, this may provide an inconvenience for you in having to share towels. There is a washer and dryer in the shower room, which is a great advantage for those who will stay longer than a few days. WiFi is a huge plus, because, really, who doesn't like to remain connected to friends and family while on holiday? :) The TV and internet are in terrific working order. There are a few DVD's to choose from and lots of books and guides to peruse, if the weather doesn't cooperate, or you're in need of evening entertainment after a busy day of sightseeing.

The owner, Luke, was terrific to work with throughout the booking and arrival process, and his apartment manager, Caroline was great, too. She connected us with a driver who assisted us with our last-day airport transport, and even took time to assist me with storing my bags at CDG before helping me return to the City for the day before my late flight. He later met me in the City to return me back to CDG later in the afternoon. Was tremendously helpful! My deposit was promptly returned, as promised. Really, the booking and arrival process were great!

Overall, this apartment was a lovely stay, and although it may appear to be in an off neighborhood, you'll have nothing to worry about but in deciding what the day's adventures will hold for you! Really lovely! Thanks, Luke!

TravelGirl,

Thank you for your marvelous review, we are so happy to hear that you and your mother found the apartment charming, spacious and "spotlessly" clean for your stay, and we appreciate the thoughtful details you share to other travelers, it is very helpful!

We chose the apartment as our home (after visiting MANY others over the years) due to the unique number of historic French interior architectural charms and the space and layout of the rooms; and for the 3 block walk to the top of Paris at Sacre Coeur basilica on the Montmartre hill (great for sunrise jogging or sunset strolling... a feeling of achievement!)

As you mention, the apartment is located on the 2nd floor (ie 2 above ground level) up a carpeted staircase.

We appreciate your helpful suggestions on small improvements too. For towels, included in rental fee is one bath towel + one hand towel per person staying in the apartment. (ie if 6 guests, then 6+6 towels provided); per your suggestion, perhaps we should offer guests option of additional towels per person, I will discuss with our cleaner.

You have been an absolute pleasure to communicate with at every point in the process. Your enthusiasm and positive spirit is surely a light to all those around you in your life. We would be most happy to host any friends or family of yours in Paris in the future.

Kind regards,
Luke

LPloom,

We are so happy to hear your family enjoyed your stay and experience in our apartment. Indeed, the building dates to 1869, and we selected it as our home years ago due to the rarity of finding so many of the historical French interior architectural charms, combined with such a large living room, large bedrooms and space between them all. The kitchen and bathroom were our major investment, to bring up to a level of 21st Century comfort and modest luxury.

Montmartre, as it has always been, is a bustling and bohemian mix of peoples, and the small streets around the Montmartre hill can add touches of ?village life? to the neighborhoods (even though it is still full of ?big city people?).

We agree that walking is the best walk to experience Paris. To the Moulin Rouge is 20min, to the Opera is 30min and to the Louvre museum (and river Seine) is 40min.

We thank you and your family for taking such good care of our home during your trip and for sharing your experience with other travelers!

We arrived with four children, my husband and my mother. It was so bad we chose to leave with no accommodation to go to rather than stay. The photos are accurate in terms of what is inside however they give no impression of the stale disgusting smell once inside nor the general grubby appearance of the furnishings. The bedlinen was clearly tired and washed out and the pillows had a stale sweat smell. They had clearly not been refreshed in some time. The communal areas of the building were dirty and smelly and we felt extremely uncomfortable from the minute we arrived. Apparently the bin collection service was on strike ( which we were not advised of) which doesn't help with your first impression of an already poorly maintained street. We instantly felt vulnerable from the minute we stepped out of the taxi which wasn't helped by the driver informing us to hide our jewellery and keep our children close in that area.
The owner was very helpful prior to our arrival and provided excellent assistance and we believed the reviews written by prior guests. As soon as I reported our dissatisfaction helpfulness turned to silence. I cannot agree with anything reported in the reviews (I now doubt their authenticity) other than the fact that the features and floor were beautiful and authentic. Just a shame the smell overpowered the senses to enjoy them. I have attempted to request a partial refund for our stay as the apartment was not acceptable and I have had one simple refusal suggesting that this was a late cancellation. We did not cancel. We were simply so disgusted with the apartment we chose to leave with our luggage and family to find an alternative. This owner has taken 1000 euros from me and we did not stay for longer than 20 minutes. This is a horrible apartment and the owner is not to be trusted. I offered to pay for pre visit cleaning and part of the rental as I am a fair and honest person. He has refused to consider this. We had looked forward to our stay in Paris so much and spending one minute longer in the apartment would have ruined it. Thankfully we found an alternative at the last minute and we loved our stay in Paris but we were cheated out of 1000 euros and a very bad first impression.

Julie,

We regret that you found the apartment not to your liking upon arrival and took the difficult decision to immediately leave without calling to speak with me. I recognize that the stress of your journey was complicated many times, first by your flight cancellation, then by a taxi driver whose opinions of the adjacent neighborhood made you concerned, and furthermore made worse by the striking Paris sanitation workers for the 3 days prior to your arrival date resulting in the streets being unusually dirty/littered, and the lack of bin collection on the streets outside resulting in the bad odors you mention. Such smells are not normal, and thankfully the Paris sanitation workers strike ended the following day, the bin collection resumed, and any such smells are no longer present.

Our reviews of the past 3 years from other guests are indeed all authentic, and as mentioned by other guests, the apartment is accurate as viewed in the photos and as described, and so many of our guests comment how exceptionally clean they found the apartment. I appreciate your specific comment on the bed linens and will check these; we recently stayed in our home, as we do routinely during the year, and we check the quality and cleanliness of the apartment, including purchase of new linens/towels to ensure they are fresh and always clean.

Per the rental agreement, last minute cancellations are not refundable, as we cannot rebook the apartment at such short notice. As we only rent our own apartment, and are not a hotel, nor a business, we are unable to personally pay the lost rental income from such last minute cancellations, which may arise for various valid personal reasons of our travelling guests. Such a situation has, in fact, only ever occurred one time previously, due to a renter?s decision to change their travel plans. As per the reviews and experiences shared by other guests, we assure you of our honesty and fairness, as we enjoy sharing the apartment with travelers who find the apartment?s classic Parisian style and spacious comfort an enjoyable experience beside the bohemian hillside of Montmartre.

Kind regards,
Luke

Thank you for your very helpful and informative Review, and for your family's taking such great care of our apartment during your stay! When choosing our home in Paris, it was the highly unusual mix of a large space with such classic historic interior charms that you speak of that captured our imagination: fireplaces, mirrors, chandeliers, old parquet wood floors in Hungarian-point pattern. We endeavored to modernize the kitchen and bathroom, from floor to ceiling and everything in between, to bring the space into the comfort and luxury of the 21st century. Coffee machine: Yes, our Nespresso machine is a simple model, so must push the button to shut-off; thank you for reminder, I will aim to place a more permanent note on the machine. Guests are invited to bring or buy Nespresso capsules of their preference! Yes, in the heights of summer when the temperatures peak in Paris, our apartment can benefit from a nice cross-breeze to cool it down while you are home and inside. As people do stay out in the city later during the warmer months, we usually close the windows at night to dampen noise from outside, as you did. Glad to hear you found the information binder and signs helpful, and the apartment clean and spotless. And that you enjoyed the space! At 85 sq meters (900 sq ft) the apartment is very large for Paris these days. Again, thank you for your helpful review and feedback, as well as taking great care of our place during your stay!
