The easiest way to arrive to "la Goutte d'Or" (the golden drop) is by underground. Arriving you would experience how the city if hosting different people and you will be prepared to the outside world. The inhabitants of the neighbourhood come largely from Mediterranean, African and Asian countries, so that you would be pleased to drink a coffee in a bistrot together with an old man wearing a "boubou" or to buy a telephone in a shop in which several language are used. Not the best place for Marie Le Pen or her friends, but a nice place to visit and to stay, with different smells, different foods, different musics and different people. Just 3 km from Notre Dame (and the percourse from Notre Dame to La Goutte d'Or is really pleasant!)

If you are looking for a different experience in Paris, visit the multicultural neighborhood of Goutte D'Or in the 18th arrondissement, down the hill from Sacre Coeur. (Metro: Barbes-Rochechouart.) There is a large colorful market on Barbes most days and the neighborhood hosts a large outdoor festival the first week of July. You can find a $5 t-shirt or a $200 mohair designer sweater in this area. The first would be found at Tati, France's most popular discount department store. The second at Marcia de Carvalho's boutique, one of 14 up-and-coming designers with shops on rue des Gardes, aka "rue de la Mode." If shopping makes you hungry, stop at one of the restaurants specializing the cuisine of Cameroon, Senegal, Zaire, and other African countries. One precaution, it is best to visit during the day.
