“A cheap fix on central location but awful service ruins the experience”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 September 2011

Having lived in Paris for a year, I knew exactly where this hotel was located so had no qualms about the actual distance from the sights (e.g Champs Élysées) unlike other reviewers. Yes, the walk will take about 40 minutes but the tube is close by and buses run frequently to all the popular destinations.

What I was not prepared for, however, was the appalling service we received.

I had read all the reviews before visiting and thought that some visitors were being overly cranky and expecting a luxurious hotel, although given the price, how anyone can expect more than a convenient pit-stop is beyond me.

The first point was that we didn't have a key card for the three days/two nights we were there as all door systems were broken in the hotel.. Not a problem until you have to queue at Reception for 15 minutes behind arrivals / disgruntled customers to collect your key.

Secondly, the hot water broke for one of the nights we were there, which is understandable given that is an old building. What is not understandable is the lack of empathy or respect from the man on reception, and the inference that any problems in the hotel are somehow the fault of every customer.

Mild irritations you may feel, until the last day when, trying to check out, we discovered we'd been hugely overcharged in comparison to the price we were given when booking.. With no explanation, even when faced with email evidence. When I pointed out that we would not pay a price we didn't book for, and that our level of service had been poor, I was shouted at in French by the aggressive male receptionist. I imagine he hadnt bargained on my French fluency and ability to shout back.

We ended up giving up and paying the higher price just so that we could leave - there was another group of disgruntled customers in reception at the time complaining of their bill and service, so nice to know we were not alone.

We shall not be back.

Apart from the lack of a lift and the inconvenience of the building work that was going on at the time, we were very happy with our stay here.
The room itself was good - a nice clean modern bathroom, and plenty of space in the room, with a good sized bed.
Aside from the hotel, we didn't very the area particularly interesting, though the local markets were good. We also struggled to find any cheap late-night eateries nearby, but maybe that was just our bad luck.

We booked this hotel for a one night stopover on the way back from our honeymoon in the south of France. We wanted an affordable room as a functional base.

The staff are polite and helpful. Our double room was a strange mix of designs but appeared clean and comfortable. At 30 degrees C outside, the room's aircon struggled and at best provided luke warm air. Charging phones and cameras was not possible when the lights were off. Very peculiar! Our bath did not have a plug, so we could only shower - no hardship, but mildly annoying - but more annoying when the wash basin did not drain. The bed, however, was very comfortable, and the room was big enough for us to strew our things about.

The rate was one of the reasons we chose the hotel. Not knowing Paris geography, it was a bit too far from where we wanted to be and as a result spent another 30 euros in taxi fares which would have paid for a room closer to the centre. The metro stop is a good 15 minute walk from the hotel.

Having read most of the reviews and having wanted merely a place to use as a base, this hotel didn't sound/look bad for the price. In fact it wasn't awful but mediocre would probably suffice. It's fairly close to most things, though you do need to like walking. We walked to most of the tourist spots from here but there is a Metro about 7-10 mins away - 'Villiers'. We didn't take breakfast as there are nicer cafe tabac places and boulangeries from which to purchase breakfast nearby, so we opted to do that instead. We paid online, including a Eurostar booking. What they didn't mention is that when you check out there is suddenly a 'city tax' to pay. Maybe other people are aware of this - we weren't and nowhere did it mention this, until the receptionist pointed to a framed piece of paper behind the desk, apparently informing people about it. To be honest, it wasn't something that would catch your eye and certainly was not something towards which we were directed when we arrived. We only found out about it when we came to check out - along with another group of disgruntled guests. Apparently it is 1 euro pp per day. We also paid for our 9 yr old, but having Googled it on our return, maybe should not have paid for a child under 13.
In English, the website also states 'Complementary Wi-Fi in the hotel'* which we were obviously keen on. However - THIS IS NOT THE CASE. They actually charge 2 euros per day and although I mentioned that it says this* on their website and complementary means free (I even explained in French!) - they say that apparently, it does NOT state that is is free on their website. Having checked AGAIN on our return this is simply not true.
The hotel was also in the middle of having air-con fitted in all rooms so the place was in a bit of disarray although there was a notice in reception making people aware of this.
There is also no lift and you carry your own bags to your room - ok if you're on ground or 1st floor!
Location-wise, out of the hotel and right and up will bring you to Rue Levis which has some lovely bars and cafes serving lovely food and a good market, which make up for the annoyances. This is also en-route to the Metro and there are also some lovely boulangeries/patisseries around.
Another little tip, (as we met up with French friends for a day whilst we were there) - bar prices change according to where you eat/drink. Inside the bar is one price, at the bar is cheaper and most expensive is outside, even though this can be colder/noisier at times and isn't mentioned. Just thought I'd mention as we only found out on our last day!
So, all in all no great problems that could ruin a holiday, just a few niggles really but some things I think they could address in the hotel and that people should be made aware of.

Room Tip: Ask for ground or first floor if you have lots of luggage!

We booked the hotel via hotel1881, however, the booking website went bankrupt. Before we went to Paris, we confirmed the hotel and they still got our booking reference which we have already paid for; however, when we got there, they just told us our booking was cancelled, but they still had the room for us if we can pay for them, also they insist that there was nothing we could do, except we pay for 65 euro for a double room excluding breakfast. Later on, they gave us receipt and it showed the details of another travel agency which took over the business of hotel1881. We were so desparate and we rang; they rearranged everything for us and we paid them 210 euro for double room including breakfast for 4 nights. We stayed in the hotel for 5 days. Even there's no hot water for shower and tap during the third night and fourth morning. The breakfast was okay. Hotel staffs were not helpful, they couldn't give us clues about Disneyland and sightseeing. This is the worst hotel that we have been to in my life!! x
