Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: In the oldest house on the hill of Montmartre lived fourteen personalities, among whom Renoir, Valadon, Dufy and Poulbot. Take a step back in time to the glory days of this independent and bohemian quarter through original works by Utrillo, Toulouse-Lautrec and Willette at the Montmartre Museum. The gardens and the atmosphere have a rustic feel to them, making this is a very special site in the heart of Paris.

I visited here many years ago, before the children, and thought it might be something that they could enjoy away from all the bustle in the rest of Paris.

They enjoyed exploring the Renoir Gardens and we showed them the Swing that Renoir painted in "La Balancoire", that was lovely because we saw the painting at the D'Orsay the following day and they recognised it.

Inside we set them hunting for Black Cats, which they were enthusiastic about! Sadly the cafe was closed, we visited on a Tuesday morning and it doesn't open until 12:15pm.

This is a great little museum that showcases the history and works of artists who lived in the Montmarte neighborhood, many of them not "famous" but still extremely talented.

We went to this museum by chance as the Espace Dali museum was closed for refurbishment but was glad we went. I have been to Montmartre many times before but have never been to the museum which gave me more history about the area and I found the museum set in two dainty houses very charming indeed. Our visit was during the Easter weekend and the museum was fairly quiet giving us chance to explore appreciation the display. I love the workshop particularly!

This museum, for me, made the visit to Montmartre worthwhile, for I was not a fan of this touristic area. The museum brought to life a lively and creative period in the neighborhood’s history, and served as a window into a Paris that once was.

For those in love with the atmosphere of early 20th century montmartre and impressionist painting this museum is a sheer delight. In fact there are 3 museums to visit: a temporary exhibition, the apartments of Maurice Utrillo of which the highlight is the atelier which looks like it has been left untouched for 100 years, and the montmartre museum itself tracing the history of montmartre.
If you add the walk in the garden and views of Paris then honestly it doesn't get much better than this for Paris lovers. I particularly appreciated the diversity of exhibits: paintings, photos, short films, music, audio guide, garden walk, furniture of the time etc..
A little expense but we'll worth it!
