Fantastic miles and miles of standing stones. You can either take the little train round the carnac streets to get a brief glimpse of these or you can walk round them. There is also a good museum with a nice layout of the stones at the Archaeoscope visitor centre.

The menhirs (solitary standing stones), dolmens (stone hut-like tombs), and alignements (rows and rows and rows of menhirs) are what attracted me to Carnac in the first place. We were able to rent bicycles in even early February (it was a mild 10 degrees) and spent the entire afternoon driving through the woods looking for stones.

The Tourism Office provides a respectable pdf map with a number of possible routes for hiking. Note for bicyclists: many of the paths are not paved or even well trampled, and that can cause some trouble during the rainy, wintry season. We had to portage our touring bikes frequently, and the puddles in some places reached at least 20 cm in depth. Additionally, some paths were blocked by fallen trees. They are generally well marked, and the mystery of the 5000 year old stone arrangements is as enchanting now as it has ever been.

As a side note, during the offseason, the entrances to the fenced-in alignements, which are normally opened only by tour guides, are wide open, allowing winter time adventurers to stomp around the rows of stones along with the sheep who graze near the monuments (or whatever they are!).
