The Holy Front Cathedral, the seat of the Diocese of Périgueux and Sarlat is a Roman Catholic cathedral. Located in the city centre of Périgueux, it has been classified as a historical monument since 1840 and World Heritage in 1998.

It took the name according to the legend of the first bishop of Périgueux: Holy Front
Dating from the 12th century it has undergone many changes before arriving at its current Romano-Byzantine architecture.

Its steeple rises to 62 meters. It is the oldest steeple in France and the only Byzantine style in the world.

In the basement, crypts of which one called the Holy Front Cave would have lived the saint as a hermit.

In the eastern part of the cathedral is a monastery, including a cloister whose vaults and arcades were transformed into the Gothic style in the 14th and 15th centuries.

The first impression is a byzantine essence, similar to Santa Sofia (Istanbul). Being located in this small & pintoresque village, is also a must. Nice place to visit and obliged when routing through Dordogne and Perigord

Inside the the cloisters was very quiet as you'd imagine and a nice place to sit. Great views outside the cathedral overlooking the river below.

It’s difficult to miss this wonderful building if you are in Périgueux: although the best views, in our opinion, are from the river. Striking though it is from the outside, descending into the interior opens up an unexpected world of space, white pillars and interlocking arches. The central altar is beautifully lit, and can of course be seen equally from all sides. There is a gift shop at the west end with a nice range of goods and cards, which helpfully provided two presents we were needing to find.

No trip to Périgueux would be complete without a visit to the Cathedral. Free to enter although I made a donation in the box in the wall peaceful and calm.
