Visited with wife and daughter and really impressed with this house. Decor is quaint and homely. Claire was fantastic and extremely helpful. Located within 10 mins walk of many places of interest, including the castle, 3 great pubs and an amazing French restaurant are actually on the doorstep!
My daughter loved the wonky floors and the fluffy blankets.
Can't recommend this place highly enough.
The house is cosy and has all amenities you need. You can see that Claire, our host, loves the place as it has a very personal touch. I felt like visiting a friend rather than being away from home. I had looked for a place to get some peace and quiet, as when in Lancaster I usually take a group of 40 students there. Obviously they stayed somewhere else for the night. I loved the view from the first floor bedroom over the river and the fact that you could comfortly sit in the windows enjoying it. The house is spaceous with a lovely kitchen, living room, two bedrooms a Terrasse and a loft, (which we did not use). It is also close to the city center (walkable distance)
So enjoyed staying at the crooked house, it is very much a home from home with all amenities you could wish for. Few minutes walk to so many things to see & do, and a lovely view of the river every morning from the first floor.
Thankyou Claire for being such a gracious and friendly host, would have no hesitation to return
The Crooked House sits on historic St Georges Quay on the bank of the river Lune in Lancaster. The house is reputed to have been built for a sea captain and maybe it was built in a 'crooked' manner to remind him of being at sea. It's so quaint - things really do slope gently in this house. The house is full of charm and character. It is amazingly comfortable and homely.
It is only a few minutes walk into the town with a great supermarket very close by.
Claire could not be a more charming host. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for her. She arranged for special dietary requirements to be catered for when we arrived after a 24 hr flight - greatly appreciated Claire. Claire is so friendly you can ask her about or for anything.
The house is fully equiped and has every thing and more that you could ever need. We stayed two weeks and found it to be a real home from home.
There is a delightful garden at the back of the house from which you can hear the chimes of the 14th Century Priory Church. Five minutes stroll up the hill and you are in the Lancaster Castle precinct. One of the most charming places in England.
Check out the Borough Club for weekend comedy. We saw people trying out Edinburgh Fringe material and they were world class. In the two weeks we were here we also saw two live Shakespeare productions in the Castle courtyard; a promenade production of the Three Musketeers and Toad of Toad Hall (my inner child needs looking after). The Dukes Playhouse is a must check out for theatre and movies.
The Whale Tail cafe has the best food and the Butcher and Tonic is the friendliest pub and restaurant you could wish for. The Richard Gillow is a nice bar but service can be very variable.
Can not recommend The Crooked House and Claire highly enough. Will definitely be back!! Would rate this place 12 out of 10.
Thank you Claire for a dream stay.
We stayed at the wonderful Crooked House for 6 days and then returned for another 3 in June 2018. It is in a beautiful location on the Lune River with spectacular views of the river to the front and wonderful views of the park behind. Kitchen is fully appointed with everything you will need and opens on to a delightful garden patio. The front parlour was very comfortable and each bedroom has its own charming theme with glorious views of the Quay, the millenium bridge and the Lune. Great hiking trails along the river are a short walk away.
We were very pleased to have all the makings of an English breakfast ready for us upon arrival plus milk, coffee and tea. Sainsburys grocery store is located a short walk away. There is also a pub next door and another one block down. We easily walked to the pedestrian shopping area in downtown Lancaster, as well as to many of the key historic sites, and museums.
Claire was readily available and cheerfully answered any questions we had. We would definitely stay there again and would highly recommend this charming accommodation.
