Very disappointed in this 'market' which felt very run down. It was very close to our hotel and we had hoped to buy something to eat, but three quarters of the outlets were already closed by mid afternoon.
I don’t have any problem with the market itself, I love the vibe in Watford however one of the fruit stores just outside Nando’s the customer service is terrible the gentleman serving can be very demeaning discriminative especially if you don’t speak English very well, it’s horrendous and humiliating to watch to see how they treat some customers of a particular race… And I’m not pulling out the racecard for no reason, I’m a local resident I’m in town every other day and at that fruit store a lot and I am watching how different customers get treated how everyone is spoken to differently, how some people Are spoken down at and some people are spoken to like they are long lost relatives.
What an absolute shambles. It's terrible and in no way can the title market apply. Never again. Whilst I appreciate retail is extremely hard at present this place apart from the fish stall is not worth the time.
It is a small nicely done up outdoor market but with very little footfall. All the food outlets, cafes, have tents and trade on the high street. There is a lot of foot fall during lunchtime during the week and weekends to cater for office workers and shoppers.
Just browsed through all the stores. Nothing dramatic and special. Could do with a coffee shop. Also, could be a bit more spacious.
As a long time (>30 years) visitor of the Watford Market I was quite shocked last year when I discovered the market had disappeared from its old location. I have quite fond childhood memories of this market. Used to do the grocery shopping with friends here every Saturday morning when we were in Watford for our holidays.
The ‘new’ Watford Market are food stands, tucked away in a dark corner of Watford High Street. I found it to be quite sad to see. During our last stay, we could see the new market from our hotel. What we couldn’t see were people visiting it.
It’s just over 9 am and I am the Watford High Street now, looking at the market stands being built. Mainly food stands in a street that already has a lot of food in restaurants on offer. It looks like ‘a compromise’ mainly because the former market place is now part of the Intu Watford extension.
Spoke to one of the restaurant owners in the High Street who could conform that the contracts for the market were indeed for the location that now holds the Debenhams department store. He was not happy with the new market and complained to the council, as it was blocking the restaurants view every day.
It’s getting close to 9:30 am now. Only one or two customers. Used to be very busy at this time (and yes, the hyper markets were already there!). So sad to see this once bustling market being reduced to a former shadow of itself.
