First the negative..The signage is terrible. People have actually written on the sign near the top to help you find your way, thankfully! Zero information about the place at the summit....but a sign that has almost totally disintegrated.

On the positive side....great walk up. Beautiful views and awe inspiring when you reach the top. Highly recommended.

This site is difficult to get to but well worth it for the experience and the views. The cairns are amazing and you wonder how they managed to build such wonderful structures in such a remote location over 5000 years ago. Not for the faint hearted or anyone with walking difficulties, the terrain is boggy and difficult after you leave the track. Don't park at the first car park - go through the gate and close it. The final part of the track after the second car park is not suitable for cars. Well worth the trek.

High on our list of places to visit in Ireland are megalithic/sacred sites and Carrowkeel did not disappoint.

It's a bit of a hike; particularly in March weather and signage is sketchy but if you follow the path, you'll be fine. On a personal note, my 76 year old Mother-in-Spirit would not have been able to make the trek. Believe the hand etched arrow on the "Pedestrians Only" sign (see picture) and if you feel yourself going downhill, you've gone to far.

Please be respectful of this sacred space and of the private property it is located on. On another personal note, I am committed on our next trip to Ireland and other remote sites, to bringing a garbage bag to pick up the few bits of litter scattered about.

We stopped here on the way to Sligo and unfortunately we did not have enough time to stay and explore as much as we would have liked. I was giving up for the hope while walking all the way up to the main site, but as an advice, just keep walking. All the way on the top amazing site is waiting for you and the view is just gorgeous. We had amazing holiday in Sligo and this is pretty much where it started and it was definitely one of the best things we saw during that week. But unlike we, take your time, it's worth it. There isn't lot of parking spaces, so if it is crowded day, you might need to walk some extra.

A great walk for old and young. The passage tombs are amazing and the views are just incredible. Can be very tight for parking. Bring some snacks as it is quite remote.
