Just a quick note to highly recommend the Hillgrove Hotel Monaghan. I brought my family here to spend a relaxing weekend and we could not have asked for better. From start to finish the excellent staff in the Hillgrove made sure we had the weekend of our dreams.

We had booked to stay in the Hilgrove Hotel a couple of weeks ago and then came across a review on this website. It put us off the Hotel as the review was terrable.

I am not sure if it is the same hotel or if the reviewer was having a bad day as we found the service was excelent, the room was fine (Clean, big with a very comfortable bed etc) and the food was great (especially the steak). The Bar was great crack with enough people to have fun without having to que for a drink. They did a great Irish Coffee as well.

Both my wife and my self found the staff where both helpful and well able to look after all our needs. Although the hotel is not a new hotel we found it very nice indeed.

We played golf at the Rossmore and the views as well as the golf where great.

Next time we are visiting the beautiful county of Monaghan we will be staying at the Hillgrove again.

went to hillgrove hotel for a a short break with my wife 28th feb 2005 for
two days. we were given a free upgrade to a suite which contained a 4 poster bed and jacuzzi. The deal consisted of 2 nights b and b with one evening meal all for 89 euros each. This is a four star hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The food was first class as was the friendliness of the staff and the cleanliness of our room. Would reccommend this hotel to anyone for a break.

The Hillgrove, once a nice hotel in Monaghan - has seen better days. Very little seems to have been invested in it for quite some time.

Our room was very dated with a grubby bathroom in need of refurbishment. The bed throw was stained and to add insult to injury the room was freezing cold in the morning. I called reception to see if there was something wrong with the radiator in the room - was told it would be checked out - never heard back - upon check out we were told that the heating was on a timer!!! - hardly what you'd expect from a hotel?

After our dinner in the town, we returned to relax in the hotel - only to be greeted with vomit at the front door to the hotel - over indulgence at the wedding being held there. Not really the hotels fault but at the main entrance to the hotel things like that should be picked up immediately.

Breakfast was mediocre - had to serve yourself - in a dated dusty room - with staff in very dirty uniforms.

Overall the hotel is dirty, dated, with indifferent, untrained staff - an experience never to be repeated.

Management response:Responded 19 May 2005

In response to this very unfair comment about the Hillgrove Hotel, I would like to address the comments made. All of our bedrooms and en-suites have recently been extensively refurbished. The Restaurant is elegant, clean and spacious. The Hillgrove Hotel is modern, bright, luxurious and friendly, with excellent service and facilities. Why not come and see for yourself or visit our website on (commercial URL). Our website contains up-to-date photographs of the entire property. Any queries, please contact Audri Herron on (phone number) The Hillgrove Hotel - Majestically Magical.
