We arrived in La Casita on Saturday 23 August having booked for a week's stay. As always, I felt immediately at peace with the world as I explored the beautiful gardens and gazed across Clew Bay to the looming presence of Croagh Patrick, wreathed in clouds. We cooked outdoors that evening on the purpose built BBQ, which is on the lower terrace, overlooking the bay. My favourite parts of the house are the the cosy livingroom, bathed in light from the open fire and the balcony upstairs, with its beautiful view across the water. The drive to Leenane via Louisburgh and the Dhulough pass is a must. You must stop for lunch in Leeane at the Blackberry Restaurant (opposite a car park and facing the famous Leenane fjord. They serve the best calamari and fresh fish I have tasted anywhere. Their crab salads are also excellent - in fact, all their food is fresh and inviting! This drive is almost matched by the drive to Lough na Fooey, which is about a 20 minute drive from Leenane, where you can visit Joe Joyce's farmm for his sheepdog demonstration, set in beautiful, Connemara countryside. His website is www.joycecountrysheepdogs.ie and I will be paying him a return visit next year. La Casita is about 4 miles or so from Westport itself - the drive is along winding, scenic roads through lovely countryside dotted with sheep, horses and cows. Westport is a bustling town with great shops and restaurants and of course, pubs. Many of the pubs have live, traditional Irish music most nights - you are spoiled for choice. We gravitated towards the Helm bar and restaurant in the evenings when we were not eating at La Casita. It is situated on Westport Quay and always seems to be full - it is advisable to book a table if you plan on eating there. The food comes in big portions - no nouvelle cuisine tendencies can be detected! Friendly staff and customers - love the atmosphere. There are loads of outdoor activities available too - you can hire bikes, book fishing trips, go horse-riding etc etc. Just surf the net before you go or visit the tourist office in the town, or the outlets on Westport Quay. So, whilst Westport and its environs are great in themselves, I cannot recommend La Casita more highly than I do - it is an oasis of calm and Irish rustic beauty. The house is nicely laid out so that if you require some peace from your companions, you can find that easily enough both indoors and outside. When the tide is out you can take a walk along the rocky beach and gaze at Croagh Patrick towering the landscape. It really is a jewel of a place - you won't be disappointed.
This holiday home was everything we expected and more. The house is located in a beautiful setting with a gorgeous view of Croagh Patrick and Clew Bay. It is extremely peaceful and quiet, yet only 10/15 minutes by car, from Wesport Centre so we got the best of both worlds. It is a very family oriented home, with direct access to a pebble beach. Our 6 year old daughter loved this. The grounds, plants etc were beautiful and outside barbeque overlooking the water was fabulous. We could not have wished for a better home or location for our holiday and loved every minute there!
