“Out into the back of beyond: on a bike”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2012

Visiting the west is not complete without a visit to walk or cycle the greenway. The path is easy to navigate, variously challenging and with lots of stop-off places en route. You are never far from the main road/villages on the way for a break. The greenway is the first of its kind in Ireland for safe cycling adventures, for even younger family members. The only draw-back is a couple of short stages on the main road (though the way is due for completion with no on-road sections).
Many people stop short of Achill itself: for the more intrepid cyclist, getting to this end-point will not disappoint. It has to be said, though, that the town of Achill Sound could do with a bit of a facelift. Nonetheless, we found the people there helpful, welcoming and charming. Accommodation is easy to organise in the B&Bs at either end, to make a weekend of the greenway.

“Fun for Everyone - Old and Young”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2012

Do it. Its great fun and if cycling the Greenway non stop from Achill Island to Westport (43Km approx), it would take you about 4/5 hours, if you are of average fitness. We started off from Achill Sound at 11.45 AM and arrived back in Westport at 4.30PM. However, we stopped and started, took it easy, stopped for an hour to have a cup of coffee in Mulranny Park Hotel. There are also a number of picnic spots along the route.
The weather wasn't great, but we really enjoyed it and I imagine that on a sunny day, it must be a magnificent cycle, as some of the views are breathtaking - even in the bad weather.
The last time that I had cycled was in 2008, so we cheated a little, and hired the electric assisted bikes - but you still have to pedal, to generate the power, but well worth paying the extra for it, if your fitness level is not quite up to scratch.
It was recommended by the bicycle hire company that we start in Achill, as you are more likely to have the wind at your back - and on the day we cycled, they were absolutely right -and also, it is a bit more downhill from that direction. The hire company shuttled us from Westport to Achill for €5 per person - well worth it.
Full marks to Mayo County Council and whoever else was involved in developing this cycleway, which is vehicle free for all but 2/3 Km just outside Newport, and I believe that soon it will vehicle free for the whole length.

“Lovely if weather fine!”

Well surfaced and very scenic. Although there are no toilet facilities/pleasant cafes. Not much of a problem for adults - do take drinks or a snack though. For those planning to drive/park then cycle parking is limited.

“Great cycle way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 February 2012

As otehr reviewers have said, this cycleway is first class. It goes all the way from Westport to Achill. There is a section of 2km just outside Newport that is not finished but the builders are working on it. It should be completed by the summer.

The scenery along the route is amazing and around 95% of the route is away from roads so there's plenty of safety for small children etc. This was the highlight of my holiday. A great place to rent bikes is Clew Bay Bike Hire, who have offices in all the main towns along the route, and rent out bikes at reasonable rates for a good day out!
