“Great Hotel as a Base for Exploring Kilkenny”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2012

This was an excellent hotel. It was centrally located near the main tourist attraction - Kilkenny Castle. The room was unairconditioned so you had to adjust temperature with opening and closing the window. Parking was available. Breakfast was provided and you got to sit and view the castle high above on the other side of the river while enjoying great service and food. There was a great place for reasonably priced meals and drinks late into the night. We used the hotel as a base for exploring the town of Kilkenny. Walking down the streets of town you would be surprised when all of a sudden a building or church from centuries ago would just appear right next to a modern building. We used a walking map provided by the hotel to explore the city. The castle was self-guided. We used our cell phone to bring up a description of each room that we had downloaded prior to taking our trip. This guide was provided by Rick Steves online.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of Kilkenny Castle and the river.

We arrived late at night and asked for a non smoking room. The room we received was open and smelled of cigarretes. We called the front dest and they immediatly upgraded us to a better room with the best view to the castle.
Great service.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The location is excellent. The room was clean and spacious. The leisure centre was an added bonus.
One draw back was the smell of smoke in the room, could not get rid of it for the 2 nights we were there. Its a non smoking hotel but the smell of smoke was very strong on our floor overall (the second floor)

Was expecting better things from The Rivercourt, being a fan of their sister hotel, Lyrath Estate. However, they are quite different experiences. The decor, furniture, etc is lovely. Our room however looked a bit tired. Also, the smell of ciggerette smoke on the second floor corridor was shocking. We were wondering where it was coming from, as the doors had non smoking signs on them? It was as someone was smoking out in the corridor. It would be a lovely place to visit during the summer, as they have a huge outdoor terrace with lots of seating & tables. The staff here are lovely, and the meal in the restuarant was OK. All in all it was an OK trip, we wouldn't return however
