Kilkenny Tourist Hostel
Reviewed 15 July 2011

Stayed in the Kilkenny Tourist Hostel for the Kilkenny Rhythm and Roots festival at the end of April / beginning of May this year with a bunch of friends. The hostel owners were very accommodating and helped our group of friends acquire a dorm room between ourselves which greatly added to our enjoyment of the weekend as we weren't interrupting any other tourists or groups of friends. The lovely receptionist was very chilled, polite and welcoming also. And a Ryan Adams fan too, which is a sign of a great person! ;)

The prices were quite reasonable, about €50 for three nights in a six-bed dorm.

The hostel itself is spacious, a little musty but it's all part of the character. A large kitchen with good facilities was beneficial, too as it allowed us to do some shopping and cook our meals in the hostel. The bathrooms were perfectly fine with good showers. Even though the hostel was quite full of people, given the busy weekend it was, there were little to no queues for the showers / toilets.

The hostel is very much for young people and those who want to explore Kilkenny, stay out late and generally use the place as a good, safe place to leave belongings, sleep and eat. I would perhaps warn off families and older people given the large amount of young people listening to music, chatting and enjoying themselves. It's very much a youthful hostel and perhaps the older generation or families would have trouble sleeping due to noise.

I really enjoyed my stay at the hostel and would definitely book it again should I return to Kilkenny. It's in a great location, just a 30 second walk from Cleere's, one of the best bars in town. We met some lovely people from all over Europe in the hostel also, so it's a great friendly place as well.

We have been spending so much money in Ireland so we thought we'd try out a hostel for a week and see how we'd do. Big mistake here. This place although great location, is dirty and old. Things in kitchen are greasy, floors creak and bunk beds, even for couples.
Shared bathrooms are clean however and sheets and towels are provided. I was told however by another guest here that this is not the standard. Private rooms still have shared bathrooms and are on the 3rd floor, all stairs. I would not reccomend this place for someone that has been knee or back problems or other handicaps for sure.

We were pleasantly surprised by this hostel. Having stayed in many hostels throughout Ireland, we realized the three most important things are cleanliness, security, and location. Cleanliness was definitely taken care of, and I noticed that the hand towels in all bathrooms were replaced daily. We felt extremely safe though disliked the fact that there weren't any lockers. And the location, while a good 10- minute walk from the bus station, is on the main drag and easily accessible. Even though the rooms were a bit dingy, we still enjoyed our stay.

This hostel is in a very good location to access the kilkenny shops and nightlife. It is very reasonably priced and the staff are very warm and welcoming. I would highly recommend this hostel for backpackers and students. Parking is also available less then 5 minutes walk away for just 2euro a day.
