“Tour of Ireland - Day 9”
Reviewed 29 April 2012

Well well, left probably the best hotel ever in Athlone and went to possibly the least impressive of all the ones we stayed in in our Ireland tour. Location was good for the city centre but good points come to an end. room not great, and way too expensive for what we had, and compared say, to the Radisson Blu in Athlone. The bed was good, shower good and breakfast pretty awful, didn't even manage to eat it as it was bland, dry and not the standard we've been having. Ratings for the Harbour Hotel as follows: room 6/10; bed 8/10; shower 8/10; breakfast 4/10. Had a great evening meal in the huge chinese in the heart of the city, excellent. Ratings for the Harbour: room 6/10; bed 7/10; shower 8/10; breakfast 4/10, wouldn't go back there through chocie. We were about 20 mins from Ardawn b&b as it turns out and now wish went went back there instead!

From the moment we came in a recpetion we were struck by the genuine friendliness of the staff. This continued with our waitress at dinner and with the cleaning staff the next morning. The hotel had a really nice 'alive' atmosphere, the food was good and the location great. We will definitely be back again.

Room Tip: We were on the third floor and it was really quiet and peaceful so we had a great sleep.

This hotel was great for a one night stay. Great location with a short stroll to great pubs and restaurants in Quay Street. Our room was reasonably priced, clean and a good size, beds comfortable, breakfast was a buffet and a little ordinary, staff great, wifi free, parking at a reasonable rate.

Two things missing - atmosphere and personality.

Friendly welcoming staff, thats the good bit. This hotel has two sides, front and rear. The rooms to the front face a very busy main road and the rooms to the rear look out onto the
air conditioning units. To the rear also are what appear to be social housing apartments which overlook the rooms. The first room we were given reeked of stale cigarette smoke and when we
opened the window to air the room the traffic noise from the busy road hit us like a brick. The second room was to the rear and overlooked the air conditioning units which hummed noisely all night. This room also looked out onto the walkways of apartments. These walkways were used into the early hours of the morning by people coming and going and chatting noisely.

The rooms were small and in need of redecoration.

Car parking is charhed at €5.00 per night.

This hotel is in a great location and the service is excellent. In particular Ms. McGuiness who's is an example to all hotels of how to attract and retain customers.
