Owner description: Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

Lots of family memories there from world war two, scouts and family holidays. Glad to see that the shop is now selling scottish water, they were selling 'welsh'!!!!

We visited the Loch by taking one of the walks from the Rothiemurchus campsite where we were staying all the way to it and once we arrived we were taken back by how beautiful it was.

It really is an oustanding place to visit and standing on the shores just listening to the water lapping and viewing the castle on the island in the middle is peace & tranquillity at it's purest.

Thank Preyom

Great for all ages ; you can walk or cycle around the Loch and children can splash about in the water. Toilets and a small cafe are situated at the edge of the car park.

As you pull up to the car park you will be asked for £4 to park. We got to park there and were given a map. Not good value. Leave the car further down the road and walk to it. There is only one loch with a (pretty) castle in it. You can't miss it.
