“Marc Andreae a conductor stayed here”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

Marc said that the hotel was good, clean but that the rooms were extremely small. I was staying with my cousin who is professor of keyboard at the RCS just next to the Citizen Hotel. thus I can personally not give a review but just hear say!

Stayed April 2012, travelled solo

Cheap, Clean and modern but a lack of customer service. Drinks and food expensive. It's a fun place to stay and the modern lighting in the rooms and remote controls for blinds, lighting etc fun.

Would stay here again.

This place has everything that you need (with perfect style and atmosphere) and none of the things you don't. Set up of the bar and some of the public spaces are brilliant. Loved the room... Waking up in the square bed and gradually openning the blinds and shutters by remote control was a very nice to wake up. Everything in the room was controlled by the same remote including teh mood lighting and TV. I Pod dock by bed thouroughly appreciated too. More hotels should follow the example of this new industry leader. All for around £65 including breakfast.

Room Tip: I had a corner room on teh 5th floor. I think it was set up for DIsabled guests so is probably a li...

I loved this place. Or I learnt to love it. You see, citizenM are trying something a bit different. Or trying lots of little things a bit different and, as the saying goes, the whole is more than the sum of the parts. When I first arrived (like the mat - told me I had nice shoes), and made my way to the first floor, it all felt very boutique and designer and cool - but lots of places are emerging that are like that. What differentiates citizenM I learnt is the culture, or the philosophy, which seems to imbue every aspect of it's service. They seem to have taken every part of your stay, deconstructed it, and re-assembled it with not just their own quirky twist but also slightly better - you find yourself shedding the odd smile, nodding in approval, stopping to read a quote, stroke a book, admire an interior view.

I could list 101 things that I admired, but it was probably the room that swung it for me and made me look at the rest of the hotel slightly differently. Its compact but feels spacious, minimal but ideal, designed but not over-thought. From the wall-to-wall bed (why do you need to walk round your bed when you can make it extra big, use the walls to lean against, treat the window as a picture onto the city) to the shower pod (which cycles the colours of the rainbow, wicked both when you are inside on chilling in your room), to the tv (all the latest films are free, just as it should be, and the touch remote allows you to control every aspect of the room) to the considered storage space - I began to genuinely look forward to returning to my room, which I don't think has ever happened to me before.

Last point, though feel I could write forever - every door is not a number...it is a citizen. I was citizen333. Now, at first I thought this was very Orwellian and, well, sorta insulting - but within a day I realised it was very smart. CitizenM offers a community which you are joining for a day or two, and this simple idea unconsciously nudges you to becoming part of it. What I thought was crass on arrival actually helped me connect with the whole experience.

Like any 'community', you get out what you put in. So I'd suggest leaving any preconceptions or inhibitions at the door, accept that citizenM's intentions are honest and fun, and just go with the flow. And I bet you'll find yourself smiling too, maybe only on the inside - but any hotel that makes you smile and relax, and miss it when you leave, is definitely doing something right in my book!
