“Technical masterpiece”

If you are in Scotland you should visit the Falkirk wheel. It is used for ships instead of locks. It is a huge, perfectly designed wheel with two big pots where ships can float in. When the wheel turns the ships are lifted/lowered to the other level.
Also have a look at the visitor center. They have books that explain the erection history and also present the other interesting ideas that have been available.

“Genius.”

This attraction will suit all ages. We had heard of this giant wheel that takes canal boats from 1 canal 50 metres up in the air to a connecting canal. It was facinating to go on. If you are afraid of heights is just as entertaining to watch.

“Amazing Attraction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2010

We have been promising ourselves a trip to the Falkirk Wheel for some years and we weren't disappointed when we eventually made it. The entrance through the visitor centre is very clean and spacious. All the staff were friendly and courteous. The trip on the wheel itself was packed with information from the crew and much more than we expected. It was a shame that it was raining and we plan to return when the sun is shining to get a better view.

“interesting to see”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 July 2010

We spent the afternoon at Linlithgow castle and had an hour to spare. I had always wanted to see the Falkirk Wheel and so we drove there. The wheel itself is fantastic to see and we were lucky enough to catch the last rotation of the day. We didn't take a boat ride, 8 pounds for a ride was too expensive. If you are passing by, I would highly recommend a visit, boat trips are every 40 minutes. Not sure I would recommend a day out if I were a tourist, there wasn't much else to see despite attempts at a gift shop and a cafe.

“A unique experience!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2010

The Falkirk Wheel replaces many locks along the water. Basically, the wheel lifts a boat in the water up to the top level, while at the same time carrying a boat and water from the upper level to the lower level. Look this up on YouTube to see the wheel in motion.

We enjoyed a ride on the wheel up to the top level, down the tunnel and back. Our guide was absolutely hysterical. We laughed so hard, but still obtained the information to help us have an enjoyable and learning experience. Do check the book and model in the visitor's centre to see how this amazing wheel works.
