On a recent Outlander tour, our guide Gordon dropped us off at the Falkirk wheel for a while. Fortunately there was a barge that needed to travel from the bottom to the top, so we got to see it in action. What a marvel of engineering.

As a bit of a geek for such things I found the wheel to be amazing and also, frankly, a bit bonkers. It is a magnificent piece of engineering and, with regular canal traffic , you won't have to wait too long to see it in action. Car parking is plentiful and free and if you get there early the cafe does an excellent breakfast. Definitely worth a visit and can be combined with a trip to the Kelpies

Lovely place you visit and lots to do for the kids. An amazing feat of engineering, so if you are into anything to do with boats and water you'll enjoy this. Only £3.00 for parking all day so you can spend as much time here as you want. Restaurant, play areas and picnic areas all at your disposal so enjoy.

Had very heavy rain so didn't get to explore the whole site. Certainly enough to make a day of it. Cafe busy and service a bit slow but ok. Hour wait for trip on wheel but not a problem. Boat was quite packed and some annoying people insisted on being at the front the whole time or sticking heads out of window despite being told not too. Lady from Scottish Canels did not deal with them. It also became really hot and stuffy and I was glad to get off. Maybe fewer people, better behaved would make the trip better. But overall worth a visit. If you're on a narrow boat in the area take yourself across.
