As a Club rather than a hotel you can expect friendly professional service, a great atmosphere and an old world feel about the place. I felt as though I'd stepped back in time! I have stayed in far better rooms, but had been upgraded from a single room to a small double and was blown away by the stunning view of Princes Street Gardens and the castle. Bottled water and delicious shortbread were bonuses with the usual in-room refreshments. The bathroom was really tired but perfectly adequate - and spotlessly clean.
The restaurant dinner was as old-fashioned in style as the Club, but very nice nonetheless: again the view, even at night, of the castle looming above, was mesmerising. The breakfast was 5-star; one of the best I have ever had - huge choice of fresh fruit, yoghurts, prunes/figs, etc., cereals, porridge, scrambled egg with smoked salmon, full Scottish breakfast, etc. etc. And that view again.
On a second night, I fared better with the informal evening meal in the cocktail bar - delicious. The staff are friendly and attentive, especially appreciated when travelling alone. There is an Overseas League magazine to read which would encourage me to join if I stayed in Edinburgh regularly or travelled elsewhere in the world.
I am looking forward to returning as soon as possible. It's a not-so-hidden gem in Edinburgh.
