“An absolute gem.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2012

We stayed at the Ceilidh-Donia for seven days in October, 2011. Having never been to Edinburgh before, and not having the benefit of recommendations from the locals, we approached the idea with a bit of trepidation; the reviews were so consistently positive, however, that we decided to take the plunge.

The hotel is located southeast of the city centre in a lovely residential neighborhood adjacent to Holyrood Park; Arthur's Seat is visible from the upper levels. Most of the tourist sights in the city can be reached within a 25-minute walk; frequent buses can be hailed about a block away, and taxi service is easily available. The location affords a level of tranquility that cannot be had in the more central hotels; after experiencing the ambient noise while walking around the city, the location was an oasis of quiet.

We stayed in Room 2, a double located up a flight of narrow stairs. The room was large, spotlessly clean, and generously appointed, with a comfortable, soft bed, flat-screen TV, full coffee and tea service (with a nice selection of biscuits), and plenty of storage space. One particularly nice touch was the number of electrical outlets--since I travel with a number of electronic devices, this was a huge convenience (I'm used to rooms having perhaps one individual socket, if I was lucky). The en-suite bathroom was completely updated, and, again, spotlessly clean--in fact, I've never seen a hotel bathroom in any category so immaculate. The towel warmer was an unexpected bonus (although caution was necessary, as it does get quite hot), and the "power shower" was a welcome respite after a long day of sightseeing, with excellent water pressure.

Breakfast is excellent, with an extensive choice of hot dishes--not only will you find traditional Scottish AND English fry-ups, but bagels with smoked salmon, an American-style hot breakfast, and more, and cold cereals, breads, yogurt, and juices are also available. If you are unable to eat during scheduled breakfast hours, they will provide you with a bagged Continental breakfast with notice--this came in extremely handy when we had early tours and an early departing flight. Without a doubt, breakfast was the most superlative I've encountered during my travels in the UK and Europe (I tend to skip breakfasts in favor of more sleep, so the fact I actually got up to eat says something), and provided an excellent start every day

Hosts Maxx and Annette provided excellent service, and were extremely attentive to our needs without being cloying. Maxx's self-produced maps of the city are extremely useful, and his restaurant recommendations were spot-on (we only wish that we had taken advantage of more of them). They were extremely helpful--we never waited more than a moment for a taxi, and they were quick to provide needed information. Their generosity always went beyond the call of duty--when we left Edinburgh for a two-day visit to England, they were kind enough to store our excess luggage until we returned--and this extended to their time as well. After Maxx heard that we were fans of Scottish craft beers, he surprised us with a selection of them that evening, and, another night, we spent several lovely hours enjoying a selection of whisky and conversation with him in the hotel bar (he's a Bowmore man, so if you happen to visit Islay, be sure to bring him something!). All of this service came at an extremely reasonable price, far less than we would have paid at the mid-level chain hotels--and we got the benefit of the fantastic service on top of it.

The Ceilidh-Donia is an absolute gem, the type of special place one encounters rarely during a lifetime of travels. If you have cause to be in Edinburgh, make sure to stay there if you can.

Dear reviewer

Many, Many Moons of apologies for missing your posting, to be honest when review sites such as Tripadvisor came on the scene it was a bit irksome at first but now I believe that review sites can greatly help travellers to assess their chosen destination and accommodation with more authority than the usual National Yearly Inspection which is easily open to abuse.

Tripadvisor and other review sites keep us all in the Hospitality Business on our toes and quite rightly so, it makes for better standards all round.

I am an Electrician to trade so I am delighted that the extra Power Points were appreciated as was the Power Showers and all the little things in the room.

There is no better way to start the Day than the Great British Breakfast, it really does set you up for the Day, but we do realise in The Hotel Ceilidh-Donia that Guests may be a wee bit weary of this day after day so we provide a lot of alternatives as well.

The Local Maps that we provide have become greatly appreciated by our Guests and I don’t know why it took us so long to think of this, there are of course lots of Maps of Edinburgh but I think giving Guests our own Map helps them feel comfortable with our Local knowledge..

On a personal level Annette and I do enjoy our Guests company and if they like a Wee Dram of Whisky or Beer and a blether at the end of the night then that is right up my street especially when a 15yr Old Bowmore Whisky is at hand then all the better, we feel that the Whole World comes to our Door and we really do enjoy talking to the many, many Peoples from this ever so increasingly Small Planet called Mother Earth..

As we were travelling by car we needed parking. The streets around are pretty full but we did find a space a couple of streets away & saved a fortune compared to parking in the city.
The hotel is fantastic- very quiet, exceptionally clean & lots of little extras which helped make our stay so comfortable.
Above all Annette & Max are the perfect hosts & treat you more like house guests than paying guests. The breakfasts are simply the best we've had in terms of choice & cooked to perfection.
There are plenty of nearby restaurants to walk or drive to for an evening meal & the local buses are very cheap & frequent so getting into the city is hassle free.
Hope to go back soon.......................

Ahh Parking, we benefit from being the First Free Parking street just at the edge of the City Center in a very residential area and of course people park and go into Town to work but in the 25 Years in The Hospitality Business and in this and the next street we have always found a place for our Guest, if not Park outside the Hotel and we will Park it for you..And yes we do want Guests to feel at Home when staying here and if you ever leave your Heart in Edinburgh or Here in the Hotel then that is where your Home will be! Its with us at The hotel Ceilidh-Donia for Home is where the Heart is..Oh Aye Mackay an its Hassle Free..

Perfectly located for trips into Edinburgh city center, taxis and buses are cheap and right on the doorstep. Room 2 was spotless, the staff was super friendly, bar is well stocked and the breakfast was second to none. Fully recommend this Scottish gem!

first visit to edinburgh and this was a great place to stay, walked to town every day only 20 minutes or so.
Made to feel very welcome on our arrival by annette and given map and tips on area. Stayed in room 7 which was on the top floor, view was great and overlooked arthurs seat. Room very clean and tidy and had been recently refurbished, coffee tea making facilities to hand. Breakfasts were fab and there was a great variety.
Annette gave us a tip to visit Fishers restaurant which was really good.
would definetly return again

Room Tip: stopped in room 7 front top floor with view of arthurs seat, but bear in mind there are two flights...

Fab Place, love that description and I can tell you Annette is also Fab, I know for it was my 36 year Anniversary on the 17th April, and if this Couple fell in Love with Edinburgh I hope they come back before another 36 years and I hope Annette and myself are still here.

Yes they were in our newly refurbed room 7 and glad they really liked it, its hard to keep all rooms perfect but we have 16 rooms and renovate Four or Five every year to keep on top of things. The Restaurant we sent them to called Fishers is truly a terrific place to enjoys Sea Food, small point most of the Sea Food consumed in Spain etc is from Bonnie Scotland’s Sea's, another great place Annette and I were at on Sat 21st Apr was called The Ship on the Shore and their speciality at £85.00 – FRUITS de MER ‘ROYALE’ (ideal for two/three) is truly a work of Art.
