Although the Braids will never attract tourists like Arthur's Seat, I believe the best view of Edinburgh is from the Braids. You can see so much of Edinburgh from there...the Castle, the Forth, the Bridges, Blackford Hill, the airport and much further afield. And as night comes down you can enjoy watching the lights as far away as Fife and East Lothian. It's also a great place to watch fireworks during the Festival or at New Year.

If you travel to Edinburgh with your dog(s) and you don't go to Braid Hills then you have missed something most marvellous. It is a 15-minute bus ride from the city centre (11 15 16 or check with Lothian Buses). There are 2 golf courses which offer great heathland rambles and have magnificent city / castle / Arthur's Seat views; but across the road to the north [i.e. nearer city centre] (closer to Morningside bus stops) you will find multiple woodland paths circling a beautifully clean river.

South Edinburgh en route to Hillend Country Park get there by taxi or number 11 bus from the centre of town. Easy walking level just comfortable shoes and the usual day luggage of cameras food and waterproofs is recommended, This is a dog friendly walk. Aim to reach the highest point and your reward - one of the best vantage points in the city to see the city. The views are 360° panorama breathtaking and no large extinct volcano to climb - but you will see it in all its glory. Rather than just walk, pony trek around the hills or failing that 2 golf courses to choose from either 9 easy holes or a more arduous 18 holes. Dogs are allowed which is handy for the slicer or hooker. As walkers you are permitted to walk across the courses - but please not on the greens and common sense etiquette is appreciated by all. The gorse gives a scented back drop whilst the lush grass areas attracts the occasional wandering deer off the nearby Pentland Hills so don't be surprised if a few bound past you on their way home.
