“Why(and when) were these caves made? No one knows!”

Well worth a look. Try bus 3, fare £1.40 to Gilmerton cross roads. Need to book as groups limited to 12, ours included a young baby. Hard hats worn and needed. A series of caves hewn out of the rock possibly 1000+ years ago, reason unknown. I won't say more that would spoil it! We had two super guides, one a former actor who delivered an excellent commentary. £5 for an interesting hour visit. Well ventilated and lit, not claustrophobic like some caves I've been in. Good indoor venue so independent of weather.

“Strange Caves, Cute Town”

We took the bus out to this village, had lunch, and then toured the caves. Very intriguing and worth a side trip.

“It is for lovers of stories.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2012

It's nothing but a mysterious underground, unfinished cave of sorts. The place wouldn't be as great if not for Margaret - the lady who conducts the tour.

The story she has woven around the place is quite intriguing and I'm waiting to see if archaeologists will ever find the truth behind the Gilmerton cove. Till then, one can at least go for the love of extraordinary story telling.

“Dark and mysterious”

Very very interesting cove with lots of unanswered questions! Didn't like having to book an appointment to see it but understood why. Not really suitable for elderly and disabled but I bet kids love it!

“Definitely unexpected”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2012

This attraction is one of the better concealed ones of Edinburgh, I have almost seen everything there is to see in Edinburgh, but this I didnt know about until recently. It is a very mysterious place, and the lady leading the tour is very nice and helpful and also adds a little to the mystery with the several stories she has to tell about the cove, or cave. I would be extremely curious to discover what more the cove has to offer, and hopefully one day this will be possible when the rest of the rubble underground will be cleared.
