No matter how long between visits, The Royal Mile always feel like home. The balance between tradition, cosmopolitan and old-world charm is something special.

Interesting to see this as my great great, great grandparents left from here to come to Port Philip in 1841

Touristy street with plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes and lovely buildings which also leads directly to Edinburgh castle.

have to say a little disappointed in variety of shops at the top end of the royal mile
how many taste of Scotland shops do you need in one street !
some quality shops selling Harris tweed and quite a lot Scottish sea side type tat shops. stick with it as range of shops lower down do get a little more varied.

My tip would be same as all high streets ignore the shops and look up as buildings fantastic

This is a very busy part of Edinburgh all the tourist but the history you see as you walk up to the Castle is incredible. There are street performers, cafes, bars and souvenirs shops. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes and have plenty of time.
