“Review of the wine bar (not food)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 January 2012

This is an excellent wine bar with a good choice of wines. There are lots of private areas to sit in and the candles help create an excellent atmosphere. Next time we're in Edinburgh we will definitely spend more time at this establishement

“Dinner menu insufficient- had to go to nearby restaurant to complete our meal”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 December 2011

Had a soup and small portion of bread and fluffy wholely insufficient fishcakes, fries and beans for dinner. Message to owners- you got a great location but you need to improve the quality and quantity of your menu.

“An excellent mix of old and new - Whighams, Edinburgh”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2011

Attracted as a suggested venue for my wife's office Christmas Party, we decided to scout before booking. Too often we've not done our homework and lived to regret it, so not wishing to be subjected to physical violence if the place didn't meet the stringent criteria of our mixed bag of engineers and assessors, Helen and I took time off to have lunch at Whighams. We have known Whighams as a fascinating wine bar tucked beneath the Georgian grandeur of the New Town and have quaffed the occasional bottle or two of excellent wine among the cornucopia of eccentrics that seemed to form a major part of their patrons. We needn't have worried. The cosy vaulted alcoves dimly lit by flickering candles and begging to be occupied by conspiratorial groups remain but the newer part melds nicely with the old. Service was a little slow for a business lunch but nicely unhurried for a husband and wife enjoying an afternoon in town together. G and Ts, Bombay Sapphire for the lady and Hendrick's for me. Soup for the boss followed by wild mushroom risotto and culminating in a sticky toffe pudding whilst I dined frugally on a risotto followed by pan fried Sea Bass and a tarte citron. A bottle of reasonably priced Chablis and coffee to finish. No liqueurs as it was, technically, a working lunch and we didn't want to appear too indulgent. All in all, a lovely balance of familiarity and efficient service. The food was good but not quite excellent. But, overall, a place to be recommended with some degree of confidence.

“Good food - good atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 November 2011

Went with wife and friends - we all ordered the special of the day - panfried sea bass with coconut rice and mango salsa - was excellent - had pecan pie for dessert - very nice but rather small.

Beer and wine very good. Service was excellent .
