“A peaceful woodland retreat”
Reviewed 21 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We stayed for a week in the Shack and even though the weather wasn't perfect we had a fantastic time. Lovely peaceful location in the woods but within easy access of local attractions and the pretty village Gatehouse of Fleet. We enjoyed watching all the many different birds that visited the feeders in the garden and although we didn't see any red squirrels we enjoyed looking for them!

“A gem in the woods”

What a fantastic little place in the woods. Very well maintained with immaculate lawns to see the wonderful variety of wildlife. Red squirrels , jay, owl, woodpeckers , fat pigeons lol, blue tits feeding their babies from the feeder and roe deer just across Cally Ave. The red squirrels were so close , just on the other side of the patio doors ! They came every single day & you don't need to get up early to see them .
The surrounding beaches , all within 10 to 15 minutes are stunning. Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright and Newton Stewart are lovely towns to visit to stock up with no parking charges.
2pm is the time to see red kites at Lauristen Farm feeding station. Threave castle has ospreys on the nest . Galloway Forest is a must & drive along side Loch Ken for beautiful scenery. A trip over to Drumlanrig castle was great , well worth the the £10 adult fee to get in.
All in all a beautiful holiday , it was over all to fast. But we will definitely be back.

“Another Fantastic Holiday At The Shack”
Reviewed 13 September 2013 for a stay in August 2013

This was our third trip to The Shack and it was even better than the first! The Shack is in a beautiful, private location in the woods yet it's very close to amenities and shops - the perfect combination for us.

There are several beautiful walks at your doorstep and lots of places to explore. The red squirrels came to have their breakfast on the patio every day and they were so entertaining to watch. There are so many varieties of beautiful birds as well.

Our kids love The Shack as there's so much for them to do. We went to the Mossyard Beach (about 5 minute drive away) which was fabulous. It's a lovely sandy beach, perfect for families. We took wetsuits which helped with the cold water and the kids swam nearly all day long. You really are spoiled for choice with the lovely beaches which are all very close to The Shack.

There is also the Chocolate Factory (about a 10 minute drive) which is great for kids with a chocolate workshop and an indoor and outdoor play area. We also visited the Cream O' Galloway (5 minute drive) which is an ice cream factory with tours, ice cream tasting, indoor play area, go karts, zip line, cycle hire, and a fantastic outdoor play tower maze which kept the kids occupied for ages!

We also visited the nearby Kircudbright for great fish and chips at PolarBites and Scottish nights with bagpipe bands and Highland dancers which were amazing. Kirkcudbright is a small town with various shops and a Tesco local which helped with getting groceries in.

You can walk to Gatehouse of Fleet from The Shack. They have a Spar shop, Boots, Post Office and a fantastic cafe/tea room called the Galloway Lodge located within the Post Office. Their scones and jam are a definite must to order they are delicious. They also have a great breakfast.

The Shack itself is modern, airy and has every amenity you can think of. Brian and Helen leave you a lovely welcome basket with wine, shortbread, fresh bread, milk and butter which is very much appreciated.

We have 3 young sons and we had such a fabulous time here. If you have a family, this is a great place to have a holiday. We highly recommend it!

“I recommend "The Shack" to anyone looking for a relaxed, peaceful holiday.”
Reviewed 6 July 2013 for a stay in June 2013

The Shack has everything you could want for a relaxing holiday. the beds are very comfortable, the bathrooms are well fitted out, and from the sitting room with its windows on three sides, you can sit in comfort and watch the red squirrels playing in the garden and practically knocking on the window for nuts. There are also many different birds coming to the feeders regularly which provide endless entertainment.
In the immediate area there are woodland walks and the wonderful Cally Garden, worth a visit for plantlovers, and Gatehouse itself is an interesting town with many different attractions. All in all I would thoroughly recommend this as a holiday destination.
