“Old World Charm - Modern Features”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

We stayed for 2 nights at the Best Western Station Hotel at Dumfries. Cassie and James welcomed us and made our stay very enjoyable and relaxing. The hotel is opposite Dumfries Railway Station but we were not disturbed by the trains passing by.

We took a DInner, Bed and Breakfast option. This was a good choice and great value. The choice and options for both breakfast and dinner would suit anyone.

While we were staying in Dumfries we were able to tour the Dumfries Galloway area. There are many natural and historic sites that are easily reached from the hotel.

Great hotel and thanks Cassie and James.

Room Tip: Ask for Room 24, on the first floor in the corner of the building.

Stayed her for a weekend break in early February. As expected from the name this is a traditionally built hotel from the golden age of rail which has aged well and now tastefully fashions a mix of old and the new style decor. Right opposite Dumfries station with plenty of car parking immediately outside. A lift has been installed to provide easy access to upper floors. Creaky floorboards in the corridor only add to the character of the place. Rooms very spacious, clean and comfortable with a modern flat screen TV. with full range of digital freeview channels. Only criticism of the room was that the waste pipe form the toilets seems to run internally within a partition which causes some noise whenever someone on an upper floor flushes the w.c. or runs a shower/bath. A modern bistro restaurant is located in the basement with a competitively priced menu. Good sized portions and the fish I had was cooked to perfection. Standard breakfast menu, but beware the porridge. A good hearty bowl of porridge isn't hard to perfect but this bowl was weak, watery and somewhat tasteless. staff friendly and helpful. A convenient free internet terminal is available at reception allowing for a quick check of emails/news/weather etc. Had a relaxing weekend with two great nights sleep. Overall a decent stay and would recommend.

Stayed at this hotel on a business trip two weeks ago, just got round to writing this review now.

The location was perfect for us, close to the town centre and with free parking as well which is always a bonus. We were met by extremely friendly reception staff on arrival and this was repeated throughout the hotel in the restaurant, bar etc.

Food was excellent as well – the bistro serves food until 9pm and I would recommend the king prawn curry, it was delicious.

Rooms were good size but could do with a little upgrading, and I got this feeling about most of the hotel. This did not detract from the overall quality of the stay however.

I would certainly return to this hotel when in the area again.

Another great 3-night stay at The Station - good cosy room on 3rd floor, great location - so handy for the train station and town - and excellent staff, especially James' impeccable service and dry sense of humour, in The Bistro, and the craic with the Night Porter (Bill?) in the bar. Thank you Bill for letting us into our room when the key-card stopped working! :-) The staff are always there when you need them but are not constantly hovering around, as in a lot of hotels - they've got the right balance. As always, it was a pleasure to stay there. If you want to stay in Dumfries Town you can't go wrong with The Station Hotel. And PS we love the old-fashioned lift!

The twin bedroom on the third floor was ok, , but very dated , staff very friendly and helpful , and hotel location was excellent ,did not have dinner but the English breakfast was cooked at 6.30 , so the fried eggs stayed cooking for 3 hours by the time we came to eat, the baked beans so dry , the sauce disappeared, the breakfast room was freezing cold , but for a 3 star hotel the all in all room was ok , and staff were trying .
