Well sign posted with fact based info boards, excellent history of the main northern fort of the Romans, used as a base to try and manage the Wild Scots!
Not much to see on the surface, but when one reads up on the history, or takes part in one of the local organised tours, its an interesting place and a nice stroll.

If you know very little about the Romans for a couple of pounds this is a great little museum to get you started, especially if the period the south of Scotland was 'Roman' is little known to you. If, like me, you are already fascinated by the period of Roman rule in Britannia then this is an absolute must. Very rarely does evidence north of Hadrian's wall get mentioned but this covers it nicely. It also has a couple of very rare finds such as a coin from the 2nd of the 4 emperors in a year which must have been in issue an incredibly short time. Hardly a full day visit (an hour) although if lucky enough to combine with one of the walks to the site of the fort nearby much longer. This made my visit to the beautiful town of Melrose.

We visited this little treasure with our friend who lives in Galashiels. The curator was so welcoming, was friendly and approachable. The museum is very small but interesting and great that some items can be handled and even tried on! Would recommend a visit to find out above the local area.

What a great museum this is - and packed to the roof with displays, There is a a really helpful curator. The museum tells the story of the archaeology of the Newstead (Trimontium) Roman fort and the soldiers who served there, with photos, tableaux, artefacts and replicas. There is also a computer installation where you can look in greater detail at the exhibits.
I did also marvel at a wonderful hoard of roman coins - as clear as the day they were minted! - which alone you can pore over for an hour.
The curator will explain all, and answer any questions - if you have interest in Roman history, do go here. There's a small book rack as well, with maps and books, and a few souvenir type items.
We saw there are also guided walks to the fort - we didnt have time, but would like to do this if we visit the borders again.
