We’ve just spent three nights in this lovely hotel. Our superior room - room 1 - was really very good, with everything we needed and plenty of space and storage space. It was kept very clean and tidy throughout our stay. The food was excellent, with a great selection on both the breakfast and dinner menus. The icing on the cake was the staff - every single one of them was brilliant! Friendly, welcoming, professional and efficient. They are all a real credit to the hotel.
One small criticism is the lack of choice in the bar. Understandable, though, given the restrictions of space. However, it didn’t in any way spoil our stay because the sister hotel across the square - Burt’s - has an excellent range available in their bar.
All in all, an excellent short break in the lovely Melrose.

Room tip: Room 1, a superior room, was excellent. Overlooks the small beer garden, but there was no noise while we were there.

We booked a superior double and were given Room #1. Arriving after the tourists have left for the day, we had no problem finding parking right in front of the hotel. Our greeting upon arrival was friendly and welcoming. The room was spacious and clean. The bed was two singles pushed together with a crack. We believe they were good mattresses just not even to sleep on and the crack was too big possibly due to the mattresses not being worn equally. What I’m saying is, it was not a comfortable bed to sleep together on. New mattresses are an easy fix though or maybe a thick mattress cover would solve the issue. The bathroom had a stand alone shower and large bathtub. There was lots of hot water and it was a power shower. There was no room safe but it was no problem. We enjoyed 3 nights and were able to tour the area.

The breakfast is from a menu and it was very good. There was a fresh fruit bowl offered, eggs, porridge etc. I have to comment on their sister property, Burt’s Hotel (across the street) which has an amazing restaurant. We dined all three nights in the lounge/pub of Burt’s Hotel and still talk about our dinners. Overall we had a very good stay at The Townhouse in Melrose and we were very happy with our choice.

The evening meal was lovely. My wife had a duo of lamb and I had the chicken. Both cooked to perfection. Service was excellent, with a good choice of wine to accompany the food. Puddings were nice - sticky date pudding and peach parfait. We would highly recommend. reasonable price for excellent food.

I can’t fault the hotel for comfort and location. (we did have to ask for another set of towels as only one was provided - but that was a simple oversight)
Plus points were a great view overlooking square, nice en suite, comfortable bed.
But the breakfast just didn’t match up. It was poor. The portion size was small, the meat items were of a very basic quality, the bread used for toast was the cheapest white bread going, and the poached egg was overdone and had the markings of the clingfilm on it, which is really off-putting. It was so disappointing - part of the joy of a hotel stay is the breakfast and this did not deliver any of that joy at all.
I’ve had better breakfast in a greasy spoon, or a basic B&B for much less. It would stop me making a return visit.

Room tip: If you can choose an option without breakfast, go elsewhere. It was truly disappointing.
