Excellent hotel. Very comfortable bed & clean room. Food was great & service with a smile/chat. Added bonus was a coffee machine in the room. Staff were excellent & friendly. Would definitely stay again .

Room was very clean, dust on top of tv and picture frames. Bathroom spotless. Towels are soft and fluffy, bed linen was spotless. In my room, double bed wardrobe, bedside tables and dressing table with mirror, full sized mirror on the wall. Exactly what I needed. Decor fits the room and was pleasant.
Only flaws - no WiFi in rooms and the bathroom lino had lifted from the floor leaving a bump.
Breakfast was good, breakfast room layout a bit strange, not much room for walking to and from the cereal/juice/hot drinks/toaster table. But I suppose that may have been because everyone seemed to go for breakfast at the same time.
Staff have all been lovely and very helpful.
Good value for money, free on site parking is a bonus especially in a town centre!
Thank you G&A!

Room tip: No WiFi in rooms, only in lobby.

The hotel is in a central location and has ample parking. It was very reasonably priced. It really needs updating. The room was spacious and the bedding and towels were clean. There was velux windows with blinds but 1 blind was hanging down. Walls were dirty. In the room next to ours a staff member stayed there. She started getting ready to work at 5am on 2 days she was coughing so much she was choking, then the shower and fan went on till she left at 5.45. Not a peaceful holiday. All 3 nights we stayed I was woken at 5am. The breakfast although plentiful was totally over cooked. You get what you pay for.

My wife and sister-in-law and I booked two rooms here for a visit to nearby Abbotsford. We were allocated a "deluxe" room (22) and my sister-in-law was given a small double (2).

I should preface these comments by saying that I don't want to be too harsh as I understand the difficulties faced by the hospitality industry in the current climate. Nevertheless, there are issues here that need to be addressed.

The Goerge and Abbotsford has a prime location on Melrose's main street and has plenty of free parking at the back for guests, which is most welcome. Room 22 had great views over the town and the big bed was clean and comfy but unfortunately that was where the positives ended. Though superficially clean, the room was tired and drab and certainly didn't feel deluxe. There was a half-hearted reference on the information card to the rooms being quirky and the fact that a planned upgrade in the heating system had not taken place due to Covid. But really, more than an upgrade to the heating was required. Apart from the tiredness, the room lacked some of the most basic facilities. There was no hairdryer, no tissues and the wifi did not work at all.

The en suite bathroom did not look as if it had been touched since the nineteen sixties, with a very old fashioned bath, sink and toilet. The bath had been, at some point, painted a yellow shade and some of this had worn off, making it look not great. The light above the sink did not work and there was no extractor fan. The sash window could not be opened because of a broken cord.

The room cost £100 and though I know that you can pay a lot more in Melrose, this didn't seem very good value given the shortcomings of the room.

Breakfast was also less than optimal. Although the young people serving were doing their best, they had no uniforms so it was difficult to know who was a server and who was a guest. The buffet was basic, with no fresh fruit or yogurt available. Toast and drinks were DIY but there was no choice of drinks other than "tea" of "coffee". Suely it wouldn't have been difficult to provide a choice of herbal teas, earl grey etc in addition to "tea". The cooked items came quickly and were ok, though nothing spectacular and were limited to the standard "full Scottish" items so no smoked haddock, kippers, eggs benedict or anything more exotic.

My sister-in-law's room was very small and similarly tired though in fairness you probably can't expect too much for £80.

So overall, not the greatest experience. This could be a great, destination hotel given its location, but it would require some serious investment to bring it up to modern standards. The nature of the building might also mean such investment might come at an even higher cost than it might with a newer building. I guess the question is would the investment pay off in increased revenues. I hope there is a plan!

We stayed here for only one night on our recent trip to Scotland. Lovely pub in a great location and the rooms were very nice. We had a meal in the meals area and then sat in a lounge area for drinks til late into the night. The staff were lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
