Just returned from Oban, hotel was good, staff helpful, especially dining room staff.
All in all I'd recommend it. Excellent location. Having read other reviews I wonder if they stayed in the same hotel, OK so it wasn't the Ritz!!!

Booked in for one night . £159. The hotel is in a prime location an our room had a prime location looking over the bay. Decor needs some TLC one of the over bed lights were missing wires exposed there was a hole in the quilt cover the bathroom could have been cleaned better its kind of of putting when the plastic seal along the bottom of the shower screen is black with mould an someone elses hair is still lingering in the shower. The staff were friendly and helpful breakfast was buffet style and was good . To me it was a basic room not worth £159 for a nights stay to get a room worthy of that price the hotel owners need to step up a gear and do some renovations.

We were in Oban for two days at sea—one to get to the iconic Fingal’s Cave and one to chase after sea mammals. Our goal was to stay one night near the water and near our port of call in a decent hotel. On paper the Columba seemed to meet our criteria.

The Columba faces the water on one side and the main thoroughfare of town on the other. A handful of free parking spots are assigned to the hotel; if you don’t get one of them, then you pay for the right to park next to where you sleep. The arrival desk clerk was casually friendly (a second clerk was less so; customer relations does not seem to be the hotel's strong point); the hotel featured one of the old fashioned, very small, close-two-doors-and-pray types of elevators and a crazy-carpet patterned narrow-step turret type staircase.

Our room faced the waterfront, which was nice. Furnishings were serviceable but the table was wobbly with a smooth surface that could send lightweight items sliding at a bump. The bathroom was small with limited counter space that would have been a problem for a longer stay. My personal problem came with the toiletry supplies: rather than individual items, the Columba has large dispensers but apparently only fill them when they near empty. The shower dispenser was half full, the sink dispenser slightly more full. A second pet peeve: the shower soap was all purpose, designed to wash skin as well as hair. All in all, this would be a two-three star hotel on our scale.

However, on to the management problem: we left an iPad in the room by accident and didn’t discover it was missing until we arrived in Glasgow, with an early morning flight the next morning that prevented us from driving back to Oban. We contacted the Columba immediately and they confirmed they had the device. We made arrangement for the hotel to ship it to us once we arrived home.

The shipment was delayed because the only one on staff (apparently) who could mail it was on vacation. We waited. She came back, we confirmed all the information she needed to send it to us…and we waited. We eventually received an email with a Royal Mail shipping number for tracking purposes. It was an invalid number. We contacted the Columba again, thinking they had made a typing mistake. They didn’t respond. We waited, hoping the package was on its way in spite of the bogus tracking code. When it didn’t arrive after a reasonable time, we contacted the hotel again asking if they could trace it at their end. Silence. We sent one more email…no response. It has been three months; obviously we are never going to receive the iPad. We seriously doubt it was ever shipped since there was no valid tracking code provided.

Throughout the long, drawn out, many-month process, the hotel varied between being helpful (in the beginning) to responding somewhat grudgingly about the shipping process to not responding at all. We simply have never experienced such a squirrely, misleading, annoying approach to customer service two decades of traveling.

We would have given the hotel a 2.5 – 3 rating based on the rooms and the overall condition of the hotel and counter help; however, because management was less than customer-oriented and failed to follow through on a commitment made by them, we are giving it a 1.

With any number of good places to stay in Oban, we cannot recommend the Columba to travelers.

Stayed for 1 night bed and breakfast. The hotel does need some TLC but this does not affect your stay. Free wi-fi though we did not try it. Our room was large and clean and overlooked the harbour. Some of the boat tours leave from right outside the hotel but the ferries and train station are just 5 mins away across the harbour.Tea and coffee facilities and flat screen TV. Comfy beds and pillows with spares in the wardrobe if needed. Had good nights sleep. The bathroom is also large and is modern with lovely white soft towels. The hotel is old and has a mixture of character and modernisation. Breakfast was nice, you could have cooked or continental with the dining staff bringing you fresh pots of tea or coffee. The dining room was decorated nicely with nicely set tables. The only criticism I have is the lift area and I feel since you are just standing there waiting on the lift or in the lift you are going to notice things. The lift is the old cage type you pull a metal door and a cage door to get in and out of and you would only fit 2 people comfortably in it. I thought the lift was quaint and quite liked it but black marks against it for carpets on the wall! Made it a bit smelly also the metal door you pull shut was very dirty on the inside, so ditch the carpet and get the cleaners to clean the lift door. Also the small area where the lift is situated could do with a revamp, very cheapy decorated about 30 years ago. The hall area on the other side of the doors however are very nice, large with nice carpets and paintings. So if my only criticism is the lift area and this in no way affects your stay or your comfort then you don't need to worry about going to this hotel. I would stay again.

Room Tip: harbour facing and if you are lucky then one with a turret area as well
