Owner description: A magnificent early Georgian mansion, designed by William Adam for the Earl of Fife. It is considered to be an Adam masterpiece and is one of the most important buildings in the North. The foundation stone was laid on the 11th June 1735 and the building was finished five years later, although it took over 100 years to complete the interior. Duff House is a jewel set in a stunning triangle of coast, river and parkland. There is a tea room and shop on ground-floor level, as well as temporary exhibitions by visiting artists and societies.

I had never heard of Duff House until directed there by the manager of the Tufted Duck Hotel.
Built in 1735 by William Adam, it's an attractive building set in a park in Macduff. Restored from a near-ruin, it has beautiful ceilings and chandeliers and is full of appropriate paintings and furniture for the 18th century. I thoroughly ebnjoyed my visit and would go back. The restaurant had good coffee and excellent, freshly made scones.
I'm glad I went.

Definitely go and see this! I was visiting a friend in the area and she took me to visit this beautful William Adam designed mansion house situated on the outskirts of Banff. The National Gallery supplied the pictures which include Gainsborough's, Raeburn's and an El Greco. It's also got Napoleonic furniture and beautiful plasterwork ceilings. Real wow factor and noone seems to know about it - best kept secret and a tea room!

If you're just passing through, as most people do, stop in at Duff House and spend an hour wandering around. It's an Adams designed house, and is an outpost of the National Galleries of Scotland. They have a house full of beautiful period furniture and paintings, and often have exhibitions of contempory local artists as well. Free for Historic Scotland members.
