“A little gem of a place - Great food and Bring your own”

Very good quality chinese food - best in the area. Handy location beside Horatio Todds, incredibly reasonable, cosy, friendly and has been around for years for a reason. All good.

“Tasty, Friendly, Great Value and Bring Your Own”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 May 2012

Atmosphere?

The Good Fortune is a Chinese restaurant situated in Ballyhackamore, near the library. It is quite compact inside which adds to the lively and buzzing atmosphere.

The dining area is bright, colourful and kitsch with lantern-style wall lights along the walls.

Crowd?
I have eaten a few times in this restaurant and it has always been packed, and so it was on the night in question, with tables being quickly filled as soon as they were vacated. The Good Fortune is a popular eatery in which couples, families and larger parties are made to feel equally at home. During the week is much quieter and is perfect for those nights you don’t want to cook and have some wind down time.

Menu?
There is a very tempting and wide-ranging menu on offer. There are, of course, the familiar selections: sweet and sour, chow mein, fried rice and char sui dishes (Chinese roast pork). The Good Fortune also offers a seafood-specials section which includes squid in peppercorn and salted chillies, fried scallops with seasonal greens and 'three treasures seafood comb' (monkfish, scallops and king prawns) as well as Singapore-style Curry and vegetarian dishes. The house favourites include smoked chicken; crispy Szechuan honey chilli beef, aromatic duck Cantonese-style, fillet of beef steak Peking-style, and roast duck soo chow-style.

What did we have?

I had spicy chilli chicken ? breast of chicken fillet cooked with garlic and red chillis from the house favorites section and my friend chose sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong-style.

We both selected boiled rice as an accompaniment although chips, fried rice, young chow fried rice, soft noodles or crispy noodles were also available.

The verdict?

Both meals were delicious and service was very helpful and prompt. The portions were generous with plenty of chicken pieces and not padded out with too many vegetables.

The spicy chilli chicken was more on the savoury end of the chilli spectrum and had quite a zing but this did not overpower the other flavours in the dish.

The sweet and sour was also very good and was packed with succulent chunks of chicken in a light batter which was covered in a well-balanced tasty sauce.

Disability access?

The restaurant is at street level so there should be no problem although there isn't much room around some of the tables when inside.

The Bill?

Spicy chilli chicken £8.50; Sweet and sour chicken £8.50. Total: £17 – Bring your own Booze and save ££’s

Last word?

Good Fortune by name, and good fortune for any diner who pops in. And such good value.

“Quality Cantonese food........”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 March 2012

The Good Fortune is a small family run restaurant with a take away service, situated right in the middle of Ballyhackamore Village, about three miles from Belfast City Centre.
It's neatly and not ostentatiously decorated with super service and friendly staff.
This is not for run of the mill Chinese food. The quality of ingredients and their freshness is evident in everything they do. Booking is vital Thursday, Friday Saturday,it heaves all night as it's a local landmark. Best Kung Po Chicken/Salted Chilli King Prawn outside Hong Kong. Prices are very modest, parking is free and plentiful in the area. Bus stops to City Centre and return within 100 yards.
Unlicensed so bring your own.

“Hard to beat - bargain :-)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 February 2012

I used to go here alot ten years ago, loved it then.
Recently we went back and loved it, the decor hasnt changed much, but that food if anything has got better.
I would recommend the salted chilli prawn or salted baby ribs for starter, to die for.
We both has fillet of beef in black pepper for main, faultess.

Bargain at £35 inc corkage

Def give it a go, booking necessary for weekends
