Both of us love good music and this was my treat for Mary for letting me come into Cardiff and stay with her. We ate out and then enjoyed the rich music and the story of star crossed love.

The structure was huge with a copper roof and beautiful cut-out letters with the name in Welsh and English. We were taken to a side area where there was a restaurant. They gave us a wonderful meal and lots of singing and entertainment, in English and Welsh.

Wales own professional opera company is based at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. They are a very accomplished company performing opera favourites but also some of the less known.
Performances in the Millennium Centre are usually well attended so book early to get the seats and the days you want.
There is an excellent "Friends of Wales Opera" you can join which will keep you informed.

Outstanding vocal and acting performances and a darkly imaginative production with plenty of humour. Don't miss it if you get a chance.

Being very familiar with the fairy tale and the music, decided to go to see the opera as well. We also left at the interval as we almost fell asleep in the first act. The sets did nothing at all to impress us, and were austere and simple and cheap to produce. The text didn't really match the music, as I'm sure that it is very difficult to translate the right cadence and meter into English. Why not just sing it in German, and use subtitles. If the singers are not being given the opportunity to sing operas in it's original language, they will cease to be able to do so.

We also saw the Magic Flute, which was really quite good. Again, very simple sets, but lovely voices. Again, too bad it was in English.
