Interesting site to visit but expensive for the length of time it takes. Would be annoying to visit if it was busy as you would have to wait to listen to each audio presentation on the walk around the mine

I worked in the coal mining industry for 35 years, but my visit to Sygun Copper Mine was amazing and nothing like I had ever experienced. The conditions, the hard graft; working in pitch black darkness, the damp cold environment, with only candles for illumination, having to drill bore holes into solid rock for explosives to be inserted using a steel rod and a hand hammer. Then inserting gun-powder, ramming it tight into the hole, then igniting the fuse and running away as quickly as possible before the charge exploded, all must have been terrifying! All this by candle-light! After the explosion, loading the broken rock into small wagons, to be pushed by hand out of the mine, where the rock would be crushed, by hand to then be transported to a furnace to smelt out the copper from the rock.
The visit under the mountain is an experience I would not have missed. The mine is well laid out, with steel stair-cases between levels and is reasonably well lit. There are stalagmites and stalactites (stalactites hang "tight" to the roof) to see on your journey, together with some of the ancient wagons used to haul the mineral out of the mine. The mine is very safe, I had no worries at all. You gradually climb up the INSIDE of the mountain through man made tunnels and emerge about 70 metres (250ft) higher than the entry. The view on emerging is stunning; looking out along a beautiful river valley with heather clad hill-sides, then a steady walk down to car-park level and the tea room.
You are provided with an electric cap-lamp and safety helmet before entering the mine. My advice is; carry your lamp and wear your helmet back to front or you may have a stiff neck when you leave the mine because you have to bend your neck to peer under the peak of your safety helmet if you wear the helmet the "correct" way round.
An experience not to be missed!

Well set out, self guided tour was great so you can stop and look longer if you wish. Fantastic view when you exit the mine.

The gentleman was very welcoming. it was fabulous all the way round. Hard hats where provided. Can go round at your own pace, we was the only people in the mine at the time and was quiet and airy. fabulous photos taken. Can spend as long as you like in there, no rush. There is about 200 steps to climb at the end to get out, otherwise you have to turn around and go back the way you came. Took about an hour and half to go road and truly take in its beauty.
