Description: A famous inn and restaurant since the early 60’s, The Walnut Tree sits two miles east of Abergavenny. It offers proper dining and drinking in an informal setting. There are around 20 tables simply laid. The restaurant seats up to 70 diners and we open from Tuesday to Saturday, lunchtime and evening. The food is an eclectic mix, based on Shaun Hill’s personal taste, paired with sound cooking techniques; rather than a particular country's cuisine. A unifying feature is the core of excellent ingredients.

I rarely order steak when out, but thought seeing as its the Walnut tree would be nice and ordered a medium rare steak. It came, was cooked ok, however it was basically inedible except for a few bites it was so full of gristle I couldnt really cut it and left most of it. I should have sent it straight back, but didnt which I now regret. I did tell the waitress when she collected the plates and she offered me something else which I declined she also said she would tell them in the kitchen. I heard no more and nothing was deducted from the bill. Would not recommend the food and will not go back.

We travelled from Bristol to sample this Inn/restaurant It was worth every mile
Outstanding food and wine with outstanding service and timing
This has to be one of the best meals we have had this year
We sampled the Menu de jour at the incredible price of Three courses for just thirty pounds The Kerala fish curry was beautifully balanced and we would recommend that you try this
Well done superb

The food and service were excellent and Pauline look after us very well.
I enjoyed a delicious meal of oysters in batter with a spicy sauce, a ribeye steak and a good cheese board.

Taken as a treat which was very nice indeed. It was a busy lunchtime service with a biggish group celebrating a 60th birthday also in the restaurant. My wife had the 3 course lunch menu - Kerala fish soup, then the beef followed by lemon meringue pie. The soup was simply excellent. The beef was a replacement for the pork belly which had sold out. I had the bourride for starters followed by the duck and then the caramel Fondant with tonka bean ice cream. All very good. The portion sizes were large, which is unusual in a Michelin starred establishment. It does have outside toilets, not a problem but it was a bitterly cold day! The service was also a bit varied. Some staff members were on the case, others a bit off the pace.

Back for a Friday night dinner. Place was packed and service was great all night. Monkfish and poussin starters were exquisitely presented and delicate and rich in equal measure. Mains of halibut and vegetarian stuffed hispi cabbage were deep in flavour and filling. Desserts of caramel fondant and baked Alaska were not overly sweet and showed truly high levels of skill and imagination. Can not recommend this place enough.
