Well worth the visit, it’s really surreal to walk around the stones and look back in history, I took my teenagers and they found it interesting

The visitor center provided a good look into the history of Stonehenge. Still Stonehenge is a mystery.

I enjoy stepping back in time through visiting ancient ruins.

This feels like a place where people visit to say they've been there, rather than because of the experience of visiting. Like English Heritage sites, the facilities (toilets, cafe etc) are excellent, and the staff generally very friendly and helpful, but there just isn't that much to see or do for the price you pay. There's a nice but smallish visitor centre, then you get bussed out to the site, which you can't get very close to, and then bussed back. I completely understand why visitors aren't allowed to wander around and touch the stones, but it does dramatically reduce the experience. At the risk of sounding churlish, you'd probably get a lot more out of watching a good documentary than from a visit.

If you ever get a chance to visit at a Solstice take it. We prefer the winter one but both are good. Ignore the weather and enter into the spirit. Its very uplifting whatever your personal beliefs

For the winter solstice, which is the evening of the 21st of December, English heritage decided not only would they not allow people to experience this religious and spiritual beauty, they would actually ruin it. They placed a number of heavy security guards who stood in the stone circle during the entire soltce ruining the view for the hundreds of people who were squashed into a tiny path of a few metres. Absolutely disgusting. A few brave souls stood up for themselves and ran into the circle, only to be manhandled
by security guards. Not only is this a clear breach of the equality act for those whose religion considers this holy, it is a clear example of contempt to those who are different. This organisation is a disgrace.

Stonehenge is protected under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 and the Stonehenge Regulations 1997, so we have a duty to preserve and care for the monument. Based on advice from the druid and pagan communities, the Winter Solstice was marked at Stonehenge on the morning of 22 December - the first sunrise following the astronomical solstice which occurred at night on the 21 December. We welcomed around 4,500 people to our managed open access at Stonehenge. Many visitors also came to observe the sunset on 21 December during our regular opening hours.
