For last 6 years have been celebrating New Years Eve at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole with a party of family and friends. The atmosphere, welcome sangria, rooms, champagne reception, the 6 course meal and the waiters/waitresses who can't do enough to please you and the most fantastic band that keep you dancing all night, the bacon rolls at 2pm in the morning, followed by brunch the whole package is amazing. A great crowd of people, a great band. The best way to start off the new year.

Perfect location with good service, excellent room and facilities. the breakfast buffet was to die for however, if we were to be slightly critical, the parking on our arrival was chaotic and the drinks prices in the bar were a little high. All in all a very pleasant and relaxing stay and look forward to coming back soon. Would highly recommend this hotel.

I was suprised to need to pay for the car park even at a reduced rate but the hotel was impressive and roomy. The room itself was plenty big enough and although the TV wasn't the most modern it worked well and the iron and ironing board came in very useful. The bed was very comfortable and I had an excellent night sleep, the bathroom clean and breakfast in the restaurant a pleasure. Altogether an excellent start to the day.

Travelled with my husband, daughter and grandson. Hotel lived up to expectations, bedrooms nice and spacious and lovely and warm as very cold on our visit to Birmingham, excellant food and service from very friendly and welcoming staff.
Ideally situated for NEC and also for the City Centre would certainly recommend to family and friends and return again.

ARRIVAL :A family of 2 adults and 4 small children;Arriving early from Dublin on Tuesday the 22nd December to Birmigham Airport,we contacted the reception to advise our arrival and book a collection from the usual area (Taxi Rank). After waiting an hour in minus degrees temperature we phoned the hotel once more,a frosty reception to say the mini bus had been and gone, twice.Eventually the mini bus arrives,a very grumpy driver and without a nod or hello, grabs our bags and opens the door.Only for the mini bus had HILTON on the side we were unsure as to the correct bus.Hotels need to wake up to the importance of the first contact person. They are the true ambassadors to your hotels! The frosty reception of this driver is in fact the tone of all (except one-Ronnie) staff members that we encountered at The Birmingham Metropole Hilton.
RECEPTION:We booked two rooms on the 17/06/2009 to stay 22/12/09.It was termed BEST AVAILABLE and BEST UNRESTRICTED RATE at £133 per room ,yes thats £266 for one night for 2 adults and 4 small kids.We advised our early check in request, arriving at 9am we were told no rooms available. We were reminded that the rate did NOT include breakfast .A leaflet on the reception counter top was advertising '1 night stay including breakfast at £90 per room'.I pointed it out to the check in staff to be told that as we had reserved the room in June then we were liable to the extra charge for breakfast.
It was a major deal (needing intervention from a Manager) to have our rooms next door to each other.
ROOMS: We had pre booked the 'Queens Executive' and 'Twin Executive'rooms. They were very small in size and not geared up for kids other than a pull down sofabed. The drinking water was a chargable £3.95 per bottle.
FACILITIES:One of the few redeeming features is the actual pool,it is nice. The staff attending the pool are friendly and helpfull. One observation though- why the big glass wall (floor to ceiling) opening the pool up to the lobby and general bar area.Swimming with the kids was uncorfortable as crowds of what seemed like glaring old men stared in at us?
FOOD:Staff at the cafe/bar area ,serving food are not friendly. At first I thought it was because they were working Christmas/New Year but discovered that the Hotel was actually closed for the holiday period. They just ignored customers, who had to go out of their way to get attention. Most of the staff spend endless hours standing around chatting amongst themselves. The food was overpriced and poor quality.
BREAKFAST:We were paying extra for this service -We were told to arrive before 10.30 for breakfast. We arrived down to a crowded restaurant at 9.50hrs.The restaurant manager advised us of a 30 minute wait but as we were in the Executive bedrooms we should avail of breakfast at the Executive suite area upstairs. We went upstairs to the Executive room to find people tucking in to breakfast.Again the staff their looked at us as if we were aliens from a different planet,no greeting. We sat down at table we found empty and the kids proceeded to get cereal and juice. As the children went about, the staff started to remove our cutlery and plates and all food in sight. We enquired and a truely grumpy lady snapped that breakfast in the executive room finishes at 10am.It was 10.01am.We pointed out that downstairs is 10.30 and that we were sent up.She murrmurred that we should go back down.My wife (who is normally a quiet and reserved lady) pointed out her annoyance and that we would like tea and toast .The lady brought down one slice of toast and one cup of tea to a family of six.At this stage fellow guests started to bring over their breakfast to us to share in sympathy! We asked to speak to the manager. At 10.20 the original manager from down stairs arrived and apologised for sending us up.He suggested we come down stairs and get a breakfast.Unbelievable-if it was a sketch in Faulty Towers you wouldnt believe it.WE LEFTto get a breakfast in down town Birmingham.
General Comments: If promoting the Hotel as Family Friendly,or indeed just Friendly take a leaf out of Ronnie the Concierges book,be friendly.THE ONLY FRIENDLY HOTEL STAFF MEMBER IS RONNIE as we experienced on our way out the door!
For what was supposed to be a family treat with no expense spared it was a poor reflection on the Hilton and on Birmingham.Next time we will stay at a friendly hotel with well trained staff.
