The Staffordshire hoard alone makes a visit here essential. There are so many gold objects, and no one knows why they were buried. The displays, especially the videos, are excellent and get you speculating what happened. To me the biggest clues are that many objects came from high status Anglo saxons and the way the gold cross was damaged. The museum also has a fine collection of ceramics and a vast number of pre-Raphaelite paintings, only a few of which are on display.

I’m very glad I visited the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and was surprised to find some very nice exhibitions. I was particularly interested in the Staffordshire Hoard, which is currently on display in the museum. The intricacy of some of the metalwork is amazing, as is the story of it being found! There was a great video about this too.

The history of Birmingham exhibit was great too, very informative and laid out in an interesting and interactive way. I would definitely recommend seeing this particular exhibit! There were few visitors to the Greek/Roman/Egyptian exhibitions, which did feel a bit tired compared to some of the newer ones but were still interesting.

The art gallery was also good, with a few rooms of pre-raphaelites and some modern art too. Definitely a good way to spend a few hours and free entry too!

Museum still inspires years after first visit. Edwardian tearoom a nice place to sit, chat and unwind. Children killed two hours exploring on their own and enjoyed the museum. A great place and still free!
