Took one of the tours of the archives, very interesting going behind the scenes of the discovery museum. Saw examples of documents held in the archives even one going back to the 1100's and another relating to Elizabeth I. The tour included meeting staff
who carry out conservation work on documents.

Staff are helpful, atmosphere scholarly and quiet, free lockers, opening hours are rather restrictive(10am to 4pm, Tues to Friday, I think, no use if you want to do research in the evening), some of the microfiche readers antiquated and some of the microfiches really poor quality.

The Discovery Museum and archives centre is a must starting point in exploring and experiencing this gem of an area. Whitbourn's survival as a very pretty coastal village seems nothing short of miraculous. Situated on the coast and seperated from Sunderland by the sea, with no through-roads, it has remained mercifully isolated and therefore relatively unspoilt.
The historic core of the small 17th & 18th-century cottages and later Georgian houses remain virtually untouched. A farming and fishing community throughout its long history, Whitbourn boasts an impressive list of typical village features. There is a village well, pond, green, inn, windmill and a pound for stray animals.
The fact that Lewis Carrol is said to have received inspiration for characters in his 'Alice' books from people encountered during his many stays in the village. My femme and i spent an amusing time searching every face for similarities to the characters in the novels.
Our visit was welcomed by a parade of attractive shops, a Post Office, doctor's surgery, bank and our impression was of a community very well-contained
