Positives : Reasonable Food

Negatives : The Manager and Staff are rude and neither have attitude to serve nor have manners. Food is of very small portion size, even with 3 courses , it is likely that you will still be hungry!! Compared to portion size food is expensive. We went as a group of 35; but they did not have any preparation to serve the group; which caused delay in serving the food. Main dished were served with Salads!! It is very common that complimentary Turkish bread are served at the beginning with hummus - but nothing arrived!! Our package included Turkish Tea / Coffee; but nobody bothered to serve. Total disappointment.

First time I have eaten at the restaurant after having a take away on a previous occasion. The food was lovely and because it was a birthday celebration they gave us some Baklava. Everything tastes homemade. I will definitely be returning

We visited a year ago when it was the Sheesh. Returned after new owners to see difference. We found the interior to be better lit and more spruced up. The food was just as good if not better Portions may have been a little smaller this time but they are huge by any standard. Service was excellent and on this Tuesday there were several tables with customers-always a good sign. I think Nanedan will do well and we will return again.

We have previously visited the Sheesh when it was in the hands of the old owners. The food quality and service was by far one of my favourite dining experiences in Bury St Edmunds. Everything from start to finish, waiting service, food quality and quantity was exceptional.

However, we have recently dined in the new owners restaurant "Hanedan". It was incomparable to the Sheesh. The waiting staff were rather rude, didn't interact with us at all and no one came to check whether everything was okay or not and the food quality and quantity was rather lacking.

Our main points were; service was poor (was ignored twice and only were spoken to, to see if we wanted drinks or desserts), food was alot smaller, hummus & tzatiki were not supplied with hot Meze platter, presentation was awful, Sheesh's huge delicious plate of salad has been removed, reduced meat portions, replaced chicken breast with chicken on the bone within the top priced mixed grill, removed pistachios and honey from baklava as they have replaced with cheaper walnuts and sugary/syrup water for the same price. Overall, we felt the new owners have "kept" the same menu with the same prices but want to reduce the cost of the meal by substituting ingredients with cheaper alternatives. We will not be returning.

We ordered the Hot Meze starter, Mixed Grill Kebab and Baklava for dessert.

Hot Meze Starter (£14.95) - The amount of food came out was the same as the Sheesh but the presentation was rather lack luster. Previously, it came out on a bed of salad, and with Hummus and Tzatziki. Hanedan's one did not have any sauces or salad. The food was rather dry and lacked in flavour. The Sucuk was the same as Sheesh and the calamari was quite tasty. However, we felt it was wasn't that great and did not compare with the Sheesh.

Mixed Grill Kebab (£16.95) - Advertised as "Lamb Shish, Chicken Shish, Adana and 1 piece lamb chop chargrilled" . As soon as the plate came out I instantly thought "It's smaller". I received 3 small pieces of Lamb Shish, not as thick as previously and not as much. The lamb was tasty but the quantity was an issue. I also received 3 chicken breast Shish, this was the same quality and taste as the Sheesh but it wasn't a full skewer of Chicken. What was a surprise was they also included three chicken thighs... The flavour was the same as the breast pieces but I've never seen chicken thighs within a top priced mixed grill before. I felt this was only included to reduce the cost of the meal by reducing the amount of chicken breast. For the price you are paying, I wouldn't expect to eat chicken off the bone! The dish also came with a lamb chop and adana, these were flavourful. Also, the usual Sheesh's big salad plate was something to look forward to but when Hanedan's salad bowl came out it was very small and did not compare at all. No chilli or tzatziki sauce was provided at all. Overall, we felt the dish had reduced in meat size, replaced chicken breast with cheaper chicken parts and the salad was very disappointing. It wasn't worth the £16.95 price tag.

Baklava (£4.95) - This has changed massively, previously it was pistachios & honey baklava. The new dish is now a walnut with no honey, but instead sugary/syrup water. I have made baklava before, and one way to reduce the cost was to remove the honey and pistachios. This is exactly how I felt Hanedan's baklava had set out to achieve, remove expensive ingredients and replace with cheaper parts but still ask for the same price.

Overall, we felt they have reduced the cost of the meal with cheaper substitutes to increase their margins by charging the same prices as Sheesh. We will not be returning.

I also agree with the review called "Sheesh now called Hanedan"

Having visited Sheesh several times in the past and had a few takeaways we were rather sad to see a change of hands at the restaurant. However, on arrival the front kitchen area was buzzing and the grill was smoking and looking inviting. The restaurant was busy and it took a few minutes to be seated. Our order was taken and a couple of tables seated after us were bought their drinks before us. Not such a big deal, but the waiter and perhaps manager seemed quite flustered and not particularly organised. Our food surprisingly arrived quite promptly as other diners were complaining about the wait on food. Firstly, the portion of the mixed kebab was smaller by far than previous visits. 2 very small bits of lamb and chicken shish. The chicken wings also were slightly bloody too. The meat itself was very tasty and tender just 1/3 less than we were used to. The usual bountiful salad with all the expected ingredients wasn’t bought with the meat dishes and we had to ask for it. What turned up was a small bowl with rocket salad (see photo) I’ve been to loads of Turkish restaurants over the years and always looked forward to a big salad full of everything from lettuce to cabbage and radishes cucumbers and tomatoes and carrot. This was a total let down. A pitiful bowl of limp leaves with an odd drizzle of thick balsamic sauce.

No one came to check whether everything was ok or not. We paid, and at the til I told the manager who showed no interest in my comments in the same disinterested way he had engaged at the table. Told us he would let the chef know....

Well, that’s our last visit to what was a favourite quirky little restaurant in town! Shame!
