What an interesting place !!. Charles (Darwin) must have got his inspiration from his Grandfather Erasmus. Particularly enjoyed how he invented the front wheel combination for horse drawn carriages. This technology is still used today in our modern lorries.

We were pleasantly surprised at exhibits and wide interests held by Charles Darwin's grandfather - medical doctor, inventor, writer and thinker. Visit here for a different view on the Darwin family.

We popped into this museum by the cathedral and it is an absolute gem. You can spend around 30 minutes wandering through the rooms of Erasmus Darwin's house and learn about his life and his inventions. There's a great video overview of his achievements and even a room for dressing up in 18th century style clothes. The people who work there were absolutely lovely and there's an adorable cat roaming around too!

If you are interested in Charles Darwin then after Down House this is your next stop.

The life of Erasmus Darwin set a template with regard to the ideas and influence passed down to his grandson.

Erasmus Darwin's inquiring mind and ability to meticulously research and record details of a subject are displayed here among his exhibits and records.

The house captures exactly the period of invention at the commencement of the Industrial Revolution by Darwin and his associates.

This is a really beautiful time capsule that does credit to Lichfield.
