“disapointed”
Reviewed 27 July 2009

Both me and my spouse had been to blists Hill as children and loved it. We were very excited about going again. Unfortunately we were very unhappy and disapointed with the museum. A shame as the rest of our trip to ironbridge was fantastic.

The museum looked great and the exhibits looked good but the staff apperared extremely surly, disenchanted, were not engaging with any of the visitors (exception being the candlemaker and printers) and extremely unwelcoming. At no point did any of the staff start a conversation and when asked questions were abrupt and disinterested.

If you wish to go to a museum of this type then I recommend the nearby Black country museum in Dudley as I have always found the staff here to be extremely welcoming and knowledgable and therefore a much better experience.

Everything in the shops was for sale - a nice idea but as the staff seemed more interested in selling than telling it all felt very money grabbing.

“good to see once”
Reviewed 23 July 2009

a friend and i went 15th july 2009 it was quirky and worth a trip, all the people there were dressed in the old attire and all very much in character, it added to the experience of life in those days, you can change money in the old bank and spend shillings through out the variety of shops (the chips from the chip shop are the best in the country by far). I feel it was slightly over priced for what you get how ever, worth a look around on a nice day as its all outdoors.

“Brilliant!”

Although half of the site was undergoing development we had a truly great day there and would recommend Blists Hill whole-heartedly to all age groups.

“Step Back In Time...........”

This is a great place for kids and big kids alike, interactively combining education with fun. As you wander round the corner from the entrance you find yourself transported back in time to a Victorian town complete with shopkeepers in traditional dress manning fully functioning establishments. First stop is the bank to change your 21st century pounds and pence into shillings, farthings, old pennies, h'appenies and the like. You can then wander at your leisure visiting the local grocer, druggist, sweet shop, butchers, bakers and candle maker to name just a few, all set out as they would have been 150 years ago. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and you are encouraged to ask questions and interact with them. You can then use your Victorian money to purchase traditional items such as hand made soaps, sweets, candles, pork pies and even enjoy a pint in the local pub. You can also see how people lived and worked with working exhibits such as a foundry, a mine, the remains of a brickworks and blast furnaces, ironworks, a doctors surgery, a school and cottages.

All in all this is a great day out for people of all ages (my friend and I are both in our late 20s and we had the most fantastic time) and you're bound to come away having learnt something new. Just one thing to remember - if you are tempted by the smells drifting from the bakers and fancy purchasing some of the bread that is baked on the premises DO join the queue, it sells out fast!!!
