“Fun for everyone”

Really wonderful museum, excellent attention to detail with lots of interest for all age groups. I particularly enjoyed the sing a long in the pub and also the acting troupe performed 'George and the Dragon' on one occassion which was highly entertaining. We have been several times and still find the museum fascinating.

“Brilliant. Really worth a visit.”
Reviewed 3 August 2012

We visited Blists Hill for a second time, this July and it was fabulous as usual.

The staff in the reception area are very pleasant and helpful. The introductory video linking the reception area to the village is very evocative. But also very informative.

The town itself is laid out well and appears to be very authentic. It compares more than favourably with Bunratty Folk Park in Co. Clare, Ireland, which would have attempted to do something similar.

Many of the shops are open for business and stock victorian style goods. The sweet shop is total bliss. Lots of old sweets that those of us in our late 40s would have remembered.

There are excellent explanations in both written and oral form throughout the town. The actors working machinery and working in outlets are very accommodating.

Our son and daughter loved the fairground with the merry go round and the stalls. The restaurant on the periphery is nice for lunch. The old farm houses and gardens are really interesting.

The school is lovely and is very like the school in Bunratty Folk Park. Two of my grandparents were teachers as were my great grandparents and many of my grand aunts/uncles and great grand uncles. These people would have taught in similar conditions to those of the school and it was great to show my children just how their great grandma (whom my daughter was lucky to meet) and their great grandfather and great great grandfather worked.

The train line down to the canal (that ends up near the Tar Tunnel) is a real feat of engineering. The tour down the mines (actually a series of sheds - you don't really go underground) on the little train can be a little scary but it demonstrates the human side of the industrial revolution. It shows how young children suffered (and died) in the process of fuelling the industrial boom.

The visit ends with a display showing how Ironbridge Gorge has changed over thousands of years.

I'm an Industrial Revolution fanatic but my hubby and daughter and son weren't particularly interested prior to our first visit. However the vividness of Blists Hill spurred their interest, showing the human aspect of the Industrial Revolution as well as the Scientific aspects.

If you are anywhere in the Midlands, this is worth a visit/detour.

“Great day out”

Fascinating social/ living history museum able to keep the family interested for hours, and with varied programmes through the year able to keep them interested on return trips. Blists Hill and other Ironbridge Museums are even better value with a "Passport".
